Persuasive Speech Outline

By: Jobcie Portilus

Introduction:

I.

Attention Getter: Wouldn't you want to help make the world a better place?

II. Motivation for Listening: Just a week ago, there was a shooting in Las Vegas. A man named Stephen Paddock went to the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Casino and used 10 guns to kill 59 people and injure over 500. According to Heeding God's call, U.S statistics say that there is an estimated amount of 283 million guns sold to civilians; however, each year more than 30,00 people are killed by the use of firearms and assault weapons.

III. Establishing Credibility: According to ProCon, the more control over the weapons we acquire, the less death would occur. It can also guarantee fewer crimes and a safer environment.

IV. Thesis Statement: The utilization of assault weapons is one of the main causes of death and should be outlawed.

V. Preview of Speech: Today I'm going to talk about how assault weapons can be purchased by anyone, I will also explain the dangers puts not only adults in, but children as well.

By the end of my speech, my audience will understand the dangers of assault weapons and why they should be outlawed.

Transition: First, let's talk about how they can be purchased by any one.

Body

I. First Main Point: Assault weapons have no place to be in civilian possession, but are still bought for various reasons.Self-defense, domestic violence, and even suicide are just some of the reasons why they're bought, but what is so peculiar is the fact that these killing machines can be purchased very easily and instantaneously. Wochet News states that in order to buy an incursion riffle in the state of Florida, you must be 18 years or older, a legal resident in the United States of America, have no documentation of mental health, and must not be an abuser or felon. Also, a buyer must go through a background check even if he/she is licensed. Even though this may seem well-structured, unfortunately, people can find their ways around these laws and can purchase these weapons without having to acquire all of the requirements.

Transition: Now, let's talk about the dangers it can put people in.

II. Second Main Point: Having a gun may put adults at a high risk, but what people tend to forget is that it endangers children as well. According to CNN news, at least one child is killed every other day from accidental gun fire which leads to 1,300 U.S deaths each year. The main causes of these deaths are guns kept by the children's parent or guardian which are loaded and not very well hidden.

Transition: Next, let's talk about why assault weapons should be outlawed.

III. Third Main Point: The use of assault weapons should be outlawed because all of the mass shootings today are committed with assault weapons. They are designed to kill. As Smart Gun Laws states, the security and safety of the American people are jeopardized by assault weapons that pose an audible threat to them. Also, the amount of death caused by them is great, so without them the rate of expiry would be decreased.

Transition: Now, let's talk about the opposing viewpoints.

Establishing Opposing Viewpoints: Most people say that having a licensed assault weapon in their house or on them is for self-defense, but when worse comes for worse, what happens when they actually have to use it? They might end up hurting or even killing someone. Having a weapon for safety is wrong because even if you are using it to save a life, you may wind up taking one away.

Transition: The outcome of the world is in our hands

Call to action: We can help today's society to live for a better future. Help make tomorrow a better place by going to preventgunviolenceflorida.org to learn and find ways on how to help your community to become a safer and healthier environment.

Transition: To conclude this speech

Summary of Main Points: Assault weapons today can be used in the cruelest ways, but what is so perplexing is how easy it is to get one. Not only do they affect adults, but it affects the children as well and should be outlawed.

Reiterate to Call to Action: We need to help make our environment a more exceptional place. The best time to act is now because the longer we wait, the longer it takes for people to start taking action.

Throwback at Attention-Getter: Earlier, I asked if you wanted to help change your community into a better place. One without violence and death, but the choice is yours. What will you choose....
