Description

Have you ever wondered why do we work eight or ten hours a day 6 days a week, but still having struggle with bills and don’t have enough money for your personal interests? Minimum wage has been a controversial topic for years, and as we just got out of a recession, and we just got a new president elected, who is tend to make some changes in the minimum wages, the story of minimum wage is now more popular than ever. Most of people think that minimum wage is not living wage, it is just place to get experience and increasing minimum wage would only benefit teenagers who want to save some money for spending, college students, people who are under lower class and experiencing financial difficulties. Turns out, the minimum wages has a huge impact on the economy, and the idea of raising minimum wages is not that simple, in fact, it could hurt the people it is meant to help. The majority of minimum wage worker is not teenager like most of people think, 88% of them are older than 20 years old and 35% of them are above 40, therefore it is right to say that minimum wages doesn’t only run into young people who stay with their parents, but it is the main income of many US families. It is true to say that minimum wage workers are not getting paid what they deserve, because minimum wage is based on inflation and the CPI, CPI is the average prices we pay for a basket of goods and services, for example transportation, food and medical care. As the CPI and inflation has been raising per day, our minimum wage has been standing still for more than 10 years, we can easily see that minimum wage workers nowadays are facing a bigger financial problem than 10 years ago. Lots of people are calling for 15$ minimum wage, some people even call for 24$, and the argument is that it would help millions of people and lift them out of poverty, which is true but it is not that simple. Higher wage means firms who pay workers have to spend more, imagine big firm that has millions workers, they will have to pay a giant amount of extra money, which causes them to cut employment and ends up

hurting ourselves, also, the living cost of each states are different, California people can not live with Ohio wage and there will be massive unemployment if Ohio people get paid with California wage. In other to balance the benefit of workers and firms and find efficient wage rate, we need to find the relationship between minimum wage and the inflation as well as the CPI, government should do research and people should attend survey, therefore we can keep track of the growth of inflation of the cost of living, in order to adjust the wage. There are also some alternatives way to help workers, for example, increase the earned income tax credit, and increase the child tax credit. I think increasing the child tax credit is a very helpful idea because it directly help the group of workers who need it the most. It is true to say that we need an adjustment in minimum wage, because people who work hard full time should be able to put food on the table and enjoy their life. But we need to do enough research and survey, gather enough data in order to make a final decision because the consequences of raising the minimum wage without any knowledge about it can damage the whole economy.en...
