Persuasive Speech Outline

Organizational method: Topical Order

Topic

: Will robots reduce or increase human employment opportunities?

General purpose: To persuade Specific purpose: To persuade my audience that robots will reduce human employment opportunities. Central idea : Robots will reduce human employment opportunities because robots are highly efficient compared to humans and reduces unnecessary error to a minute margin., limitless working hour achievable by robots and also possibility of reduction in employment cost.

Introduction I.

Robots or artificial intelligence (A.I) are basically machines that reduces or replaces human work even if it may vary in size and shape but does exactly what it is programmed to do with minimal or zero error.

II.

Remember watching the Terminator by Arnold Schwarzenegger or I,Robot starred by Will Smith that showed and previewed to us about life with robots and artificial intelligence living among us, well I believe that time is closer then we think it is.

III.

In the current millennial era, robotics is a fast paced developing sector in the world as our technological needs and demand increases over time. So the question that we wonder is what happens to our employability with the existence of robots and A.I

IV.

Well I believe that the existence of this robot will reduce our employment rate in a rapid manner based on the facts and figures. Robots are seen far as a replacement and a far better option compared to human employment because of main reasons. 1

(Transition: Let’s look into the reason behind preference of robot employment compared to human.)

BODY: I

Robots are highly efficient compared to humans and reduces unnecessary error to a minute margin. A. Robots are programmed to do a certain task at a rapid speed with assurance of minimal or zero error which compared to human speed may vary and depends on many factors like age, energy and even mood. Human error are very likely to happen because even simple reasons like tiredness, laziness or even lack of concentration. 1. Robot’s efficiency will most like to affect blue collar employability. Workers like in assembly line or manufacturing department are deemed to do the exact thing repeatedly and production speed is based on the workers. 2. Reduction in workers’ speed or an error would likely cause disruption in the production line which may affect the company in loss of dollars and cents. 3. A robot is known to do things at a faster rate than an ordinary worker especially a repeated task. Rapid pace of the robots will increase production which in the end boost the revenue of the company which is considered the ultimate goal. 4. Elon Musk, founder of Tesla believes robots can do faster therefore has took a massive leap by changing his car 2

manufacturing assembly line to be fully automated.(Tesla’s future is completely inhuman — and we shouldn’t be surprised, https://www.businessinsider.my/tesla-completely-inhumanautomated-factory-2017-5?r=US&IR=T)

(Transition: Now that we have seen how robots are highly efficient and reduces errors, let’s move on with limitless working hours achievable by robots. Internal Preview: I will clarify about possibility of robots to be working around the clock which is a major. )

II

Robots allows the possibility of limitless working hours compared to human work force who is allowed to work for certain number of hours only . A. Robots do not feel tired or exhausted because of long working hours or extended hours because are designed and programmed to do so. Robots are not confined to any labour standards unlike human workers who have laws to abide and feelings that may affect work. 1. Humans are to follow the standards set by the government or international bodies regarding labour procedures. 2. According to International Labour Organisation, a worker is

limited to be working for 48 hours per week and maximum 8 hours per day. (International Labour Standards on Working time, https://www.ilo.org/global/standards/subjects-covered-byinternational-labour-standards/working-time/lang-en/index.htm)

3

3. Robots can perform their task for any period of time without interruption. Many manufacturing companies today have their productions to be fully done by robots as production never ends which results into unlimited productions which makes the company profits they were aiming for.

Internal Summary: Let’s pause for a moment to recap the things that affects reduction of human employment because of robots. Robots highly efficient with zero error and possibility of robots working limitlessly. Transition: Now, let’s take a look at my final point and perhaps the most relatable point which is possibility of reduction in employment cost.

III

The massive possibility of reduction in employment cost by the companies with existence of robots is one of the many factors employment for human work force will reduce A. Employment cost is the cost paid to all the worker’s salaries and their benefits. Employment cost consist of worker salary, commissions and benefits in term of medical insurance and other benefits. (total employment

cost,http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/total-

employment-cost.html) 1. Employers are entitled to pay all their employees these benefits based their seniority or based on post and ranks which will cost majorly in company’s account

4 2. Robots are another option to the company which are considered cost saving compared to human work force. Robots are not given salary and a sum of money which is used to pay for the machinery can be earned back within weeks. 3. Robots do not breakdown that easily and maintenance cost will not cost as much as total employment cost for all employees in the company.

CONCLUSION: I.

In a nutshell, we can say that robots are far more beneficial compared to human work force therefore companies will choose robots to replace human employment which will affect the employment rate of human workforce to reduced.

II.

Elon Musk , founder of Tesla and Space X said and I quoted,” There certainly will be job disruption. Because what’s going to happen is robots will be able to do everything better than us.” . I too believe that the future of our world will soon belong to the robots which will impact us terribly in which we need to prepare starting from now.
