Introduction: "One of the most interesting, and eye opening, parts of studying abroad experience is being able to view the united states from the lens of a different country" a quote by Madison Voss. Studying abroad is a fast-growing phenomenon, urged on by ease of travel, by political changes, by economic need, by cultural interaction, according to the book "Living and Studying Abroad." Increasing global competition for jobs, American graduates

lack the international experience, language capabilities and cross-cultural communication skills necessary to succeed in the global economy.” stated in a newspaper article by the NY Times. Studying abroad is offered at many colleges for students to study a semester or summer in a different country. I believe every college student should study abroad once in their four years in college. I am hoping for myself I will be able to study abroad once or twice throughout my four years here at West Virginia University. Many people have different opinions of if a college student should study abroad or not. But I am here today to persuade you why you should study abroad. First, 1

Studying abroad can teach you invaluable life lessons about

to discipline yourself because you are there to study, so a large portion of your focus should be on academics and not all of it on your new freedoms and social life. You will meet so many new friends from across the world that are also studying abroad. Just like college friends the friends you meet in the other country become lifetime friends. Another reason is you could enroll in a course that is not offered at West Virginia University and studying it overseas can show you how other cultures perceive that subject. Also, your potential employer will see that you are independent, dedicated, hardworking, and aware of global and international issues.

There are so many places to visit around the world that offer courses for your major, but according to forbes.com the 53% of students travel to Europe, but the three leading destinations is the United Kingdom, Italy, and Spain. According to the Open Doors Report growth in study aboard in Asia has increased by 23% which makes up 12% of the US students overall. China has been promoted by universities for research and non credited education programs like volunteer work or internships. There are many positive outcomes of studying aboard that researchers have found, which is 1. 2. 3.

Rebuttal: I understand that studying aboard can be very expensive for some of us that's why they choose not studying aboard, but WVU and the study aboard programs offer many different scholarships and grants to make it more affordable to you and your family. Plus, your finical aid and scholarships you may already have can transfer over. The programs try to make it as least as expensive as possible unlike if you were to vacation there with your family, it'd be five times more expensive. Also, people are afraid of their credits taken oversea may not transfer back over to their university, and that means more money wasted because it won't be counted towards your 120. The good thing is that we have a TES system that can show you which courses will come back into their system as a certain class. So, you can check

with the TES system to determine which credits will transfer back in. You can also talk with your advisors and your major department if they will accept it and they can sign a petiton for the course you are taking overseas to count towards your degree at WVU. It is kinda of like a promise that if you take a class and pass it it'll come back over with no issuess. Other critics may say that it is a waste of time and will not help you in the long-run with your career. Employers do value seeing you have study abroad. It gives them the impression that you are adaptable, open to new experiences, and you have experienced a culture beyond your own. Overall, there are many opportunities for you to discover overseas in college. Everyone that I have spoken to that has study abroad claimed it was the best experience of their life. Go explore the world, Discover yourself , and Study Aboard!!!...
