Sydney Harding Professor Janezic EDU292 37143 3 November 2019 Jose Olivarez Poetry Poem #1 - “You Get Fat When You’re in Love” The theme that I feel as Jose Olivarez is trying to convey in his poem “You Get Fat When You’re in Love,” is all about loving yourself. This poem is all about embracing your body for the way it is. The speaker isn’t trying to ‘get into shape’ to feel loved. It’s all about love and self-worth. No one is perfect in this world. No one. A quote that he said in this poem that really stuck out to me was, “your buttons can’t hold all the love / rippling up in the middle of your ribcage.” Love is so much more than what one looks like. It’s all about how you feel about someone. Looks aren’t everything. Loving someone for the way they are is true love. Making fun of someone or intentionally trying to put someone down is not love in the slightest.

Poem #2 - “What’s Good ‘Angles’” Another poem that I decided to listen to was called “What’s Good ‘Angles’”. This video/poem was all about making a difference. All of the right angles make a difference. Continuing to push through, even in the face of failure, makes you super strong. Getting past your demons and fears makes someone strong and brave. A quote that really stuck out to me in this was, “The game was easy, when the game was just a ball in the basket.” In reality, nothing in life is truly easy. We all

go through obstacles and hardships in life. Shooting a ball in a basket isn’t easy. Even super great and famous basketballs miss shots. No one is perfect. We all go through hardships, and we can all make a difference in life.

Poem #3 - “Louder Than a Bomb 2013 Omaha, SemiFinals: Jose Olivarez” The last poem that I decided to take a look as was called. “Louder Than a Bomb 2013 Ohama, SemiFinals: Jose Olivarez.” This poem is all about being different. I had difficulty understanding what the main idea of this poem, but that’s what I came up with from my understanding of it. It seems as if sometimes you’re different than someone else, you feel ‘“lost” or “out of place.” If where you live, someone is more wealthy than you or speaks another language, we seem to compare ourselves to them. We may think they’re “smarter” or “more educated.” Sometimes we feel as we need constant approval and validation from others, no matter what they situation may be about. Sometimes people feel as they can only speak to each other within their own culture. That’s not true at all. Anyone can talk to anyone. A quote that spoke out to me from this poem was, “what I wanted was a teacher to give me gold stars like the other kids.” That all goes back to validation. We don’t feel good enough unless someone tells us “good job” or “what you’re doing is great.” I feel like everyone can be a little nicer to themselves and stop giving themselves such a hard time. We’re all trying our best here. We’re all trying to accomplish something in life.

The poem that stands out to me as the most ‘memorable’ is definitely the poem titled “You Get Fat When You’re in Love.” It’s super important to understand and know that no one in life is perfect. Whether you want to believe it or not, everyone struggles with something. This can all vary from jobs, school, relationships, or even someone’s study habits. Nothing in life is going to be easy. Everyone in life is going to have to do something that they don’t want to do. Every day of life isn’t going to be all rainbows and butterflies. Life is difficult, and that’s okay to realize. Everyone will get through their struggles. Every single person....
