Description

Laura Pacelli Professor Sood Non-European Literature 13 September 19 Journal 1 Prompt #2 There are three women in Mariama Ba’s So Long a Letter that all combat infidelity in their marriages. Aissatou takes a stand, Ramatoulaye lets it happen, and Jacqueline allows herself to get mentally ill from it. In comparison, all three women have different values that they put first in their lives. These values, in turn, led them to each react differently to the same situation. Aissatou divorces Mawdo Ba for his infidelity. She values her independence over everything even traditions thus giving herself the ability to go back to school so she could take care of her children alone. Ramatoulaye valued tradition, religion, and family way too much the same. From a Protestant woman’s perspective, infidelity was not what she understood to be acceptable, so it drew her into a depression from the loss of this love. Therefore, the values these women put first indicate their fate even if the same event happened to them....
