kalabagh dam importance and hurdle in building kalabagh dam...

Description

Kalabagh dam was planned to be constructed on the River Indus at Kalabagh in Mianwali District, Punjab in the beginning but the construction plan was cancelled due to provincial disputes. The construction plan failed to take place because of lack of national agreement. Provincial dispute was due to the reason that Punjab will have benefits from the dam while Sindh and Baluchistan would face water shortages. Political parties of Sindh and KPK thought that construction of this dam will give Punjab an upper hand to put rest of the provinces at risk so they opposed its construction. They feared that all power and control will be in the hands of Punjab. Furthermore, some environmental and social issues also effected the construction of this dam. The Kalabagh dam in spite of having power to provide enough energy, it can harm the natural irrigation system, causing drought in areas near the Indus River outside Kalabagh. The government of KPK opposed the construction of the Kalabagh dam because they were worried that the agriculture land of Nowshera would be destroyed and Nowshera would be flooded. According to some reports, the Kalabagh dam would place pressure on river Kabul, which will cause water logging in KPK, this will result in polluting the river Indus. Provincial governments and political parties are still concerned about the money investments in Kalabagh Dam. The Sindh government claims that they will be deprived of water resources and water will be insufficient in their region if the dam is constructed. Different governments tried to resume the project but due to protests in Sindh and opposition, the project was closed again....
