USA: Pearson Education, Inc. Purpose of the Course: The purpose of this hybrid course is for students to demonstrate knowledge and have an understanding of health issues in order to make healthy lifestyle choices. Students will demonstrate knowledge in current health issues, related research, and applicability of this knowledge in achieving wellness. This course is part of the Honors Enrichment Program and students can earn honors credit by writing an extra paper and making a presentation in class. PERRT majors who complete four courses or 12 credits in the program will earn the Honors Curriculum Strand. This course is part of the Civic Engagement Program, two course requirement. In terms of Civic Engagement, students will use their health knowledge as advocates in their community and families members. This hybrid course is two hours in class and one hour online. Course Objectives: 1. Students will be able to appraise sources of stress, analyze the negative effects of stress, and apply coping strategies. 2. Students will design a personalized general fitness program inclusive of aerobic and anaerobic (weight training) for a healthy lifestyle. 3. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge in designing a high fiber diet that meets their needs, prevents heart disease, and promotes wellness. 4. Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding about human sexuality, infectious diseases, and reproductive choices in regard to wellness. 5. Students will be able to evaluate factors that lead to drug, alcohol, and tobacco addiction, and learn about treatments/interventions to break these bad habits. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Attendance: According to KCC Official Policy, students absent more than 6 hours may be asked to withdraw or receive a WU. There are no excused absences! If students are over 15 minutes late for class, two lateness will count as one absence. Additionally, journals, exams, and blackboard discussions will be graded and will also count in class attendance. Attendance will affect your grade. You will receive ten extra points on the final exam for good attendance. Class Procedures: These class rules need to be followed: a. No phone use or text-messaging allowed. b. Raise your hand if you want to speak in class. c. If students leave early—without permission—they will be marked absent. d. Students should not disrupt the class by talking or walking around. e. Show respect to everyone in the class, do not annoy or disrupt the class.

f. Come to class with a good attitude, be motivated, and be ready to work. g. No sleeping in class. h. Do not eat your meals in class. i. Plagiarism and cheating will not be tolerated. Reminders: Students who need to withdraw from the health course, should do so before the deadline, you can withdraw online now. If tutoring for the health course is needed, please go to room L-605 in the library. If you need tutoring for writing papers, make an appointment in L-219. Exams: Students will take three multiple choice exams (50 questions each) online (one hour and 10 minutes time limit with date deadline), and a Departmental Final that includes 100 multiple choice questions given in class. The Departmental Final Exam will include 50 multiple choice questions, 4 or 5 questions from all 12 chapters and 50 multiple choice questions from chapters 5, 6, and 13. All exams will include questions taken from the course textbook, power point presentations, class notes, and discussions. Grading: The Departmental Final and the three exams will be worth 20% each, for a total of 80%. The journals and blackboard discussions is worth 20%. Attendance will be given for work completed on journals, blackboard discussions, and exams. An extra term paper can increase your grade or reduce your absences. Students who miss any exam or do not complete the journals will receive a grade of INC. TOPICS The chapters assigned to be read in the textbook are the topics that will be discussed in class. Class assignments include reading the chapters and being prepared for class participation. Power Point notes covered in class are in blackboard, read the notes before class for discussions.
