La “nuova” madre (Riga 19-32) Non ci voleva molto ad accorgersi che aveva una grande soggezione di mio padre. Anche quando usava con lui certe maniere familiari che le erano spontanee, lo faceva con 25 aria esitante e un poco timorosa. E mio padre, pur sembrando contento di portarsi a casa quella donna, non le dava nessuna confidenza. Non li vedevo bisbigliare nè scambiarsi abbracci o baci, come si sente dire che facciano i fidanzati, o gli sposi in viaggio di nozze. Questo mi fece piacere. Egli aveva la solita aria di arrogante distacco: ed essa sedeva compostamente, discosta da lui tenendo in grembo la sua preziosa borsa, di cui stringeva 30 la chiusura con tutte e dieci le dita. Le sue mani erano piccole e ruvide, alla sinistra portava un anellino d’oro: la fede di mio padre. Mio padre, invece, non portava nessun anello.

He had his usual air of detached arrogance: and she sat sedatelycompositely, away from him, holding her precious bag in her lap, which she clutched shut with all ten of her fingers.
