Description

Lab Mini-Report 1 Macromolecules function within the body in various roles. Macromolecules include sugars, starches, lipids, and proteins. This experiment was designed to identify different macromolecules within different biological substances and apply it to problems relevant to the common health. Five different experiments were performed. The first four tested obvious substances with specific, separate molecules. The first experiment used benedict’s solution to test for sugar; second experiment tested for starch using Lugol’s iodine. The third experiment tested for lipids using Sudan IV; and, the fourth tested for proteins via the Biuret’s test. The fifth experiment tested four unknown substances (apple extract, potato extract, corn seed extract, and blood plasma) for lipids, starches, proteins, and sugars. It was concluded that 1) substances positive for sugars turn a brick color 2) substances positive for starch turn a blue-black color 3) substances test positive for lipids have a pink-deep layer and 4) substances tested positive for proteins turn a violet-purple color. The fifth experiment had various results: all four substances were negative for Sudan IV, blood plasma was positive for proteins, corn seed was positive for starch, and apple extract was positive for reducing sugars. These results provide evidence that certain substances can have all, some, or one of the macromolecules; and, that some of the tests that are supposed to be positive turned out to be negative because of way the molecular structure of the macromolecules are. Key words: Macromolecules, lipids, Lugol’s iodine, Sudan IV, Biuret’s Solution...
