Example: Hastorf and Cantril (1954) Participants: Dartmouth and Princeton college students ● Study 1-- survey ○ Princeton students: ALL thought game was rough and dirty, 90% thought Dartmouth started it ○ Dartmouth students: Smaller percentage thought “rough and dirty” Participants: Dartmouth and Princeton college students ● Study 2: watch video and count the number of infractions ○ Results: Perceived number of infractions ■ Dartmouth: Dartmouth team had 4.3, Princeton team had 4.4 ■ Princeton: Dartmouth team had 9.8, Princeton team had 4.2 ○ Researchers concluded that there is a spotlight-- what we draw our attention to has to do with our preconceived knowledge Two key ideas in social psych 1. People construct their own reality-- people see the world through their own lenses (goals, expectations, interpretations: which matter and affect how we interpret things) 2. Social influences are pervasive-- elevator example: if you are the only person in the elevator are you going to face forward? Social norms, influences. Social Psychology: The scientific study of the effects of social and cognitive processes on the way individuals perceive, influence and relate to others The full cycle of social psych: real world→ theory world→ research world→ real world, etc. 4 stages: observation, data collection, theory refinement, application...
