Johanna Geisler 06/25/2020 Lecture Notes 11 “A Doll’s House” Act 2 and 3 ● Starts with a connection between Nora and Dr. Rank ● Mrs. Linde thinks Nora is having an affair ● Helmer believes that he will sacrifice himself if he needs to ○ To protect his wife ● Nora is worried Helmer will take the blame for what she has done ● Rank is in love with Nora ○ Nora wont ask someone who loves her for the money anymore ○ Suggested that when Rank dies Nora will inherit his money ● At the beginning of the play Nora seems childlike ● Krogstad raises the stakes with Nora ○ It is now about life or death (suicide of Nora) ● The wonderful thing is that Torval is going to take the blame; or so she thinks ● Linde wants all of the truth to come out ● Linde and Krogstad become better people and end up together eventually ● Torvald has the wish to sacrifice himself ○ But that’s not actually the case ● Torvald feels like he owns his wife ○ Not built to be a good husband to Nora ● Nora and Torvald have a confrontation ○ Now has to deal with the truth of their marriage ● Never got a chance to live and have her own opinions ○ Treated like a doll from her husband and father for themselves ● Nora feels like she has to give up her honor and Torvald should too because of love ● Nora has now taken control of the conversation and Torvald acts childlike ● Main message: Nora feels the marriage was never equal and she ends up leaving him ● We are left to wonder is Helmer can ever change ○ What will happen next? ● Strong femnist messages about marriage and a wife's duty ● Every character seems to have conflict with one another ● Controversial play for its time

“V for Vendetta Book 1” By Alan Moore ● Alan Moore is known for his comic books ○ Has crazy political views and religious views ● Book and the film are very different ● Written during the Thatcher Administration; showed how England could become facist ● Represents the future of the 1980s; set in 1997 to 1998 ● Visual Literacy: Jagged lines represent radio frequency ● There are quarantine zones and lack of food; rationing ● Evey and V both are getting dressed up in the beginning ● Fingerman are the cops and the are bad ● V comes and rescues Evey from the Fingerman ○ Very dramatically kills the cops ○ V is not really a hero ● V blows up Parliament ● Channeling Guy Fawkes ■ Wearing a Guy Fawkes mask ■ November 5th ● Everyone is on the hunt for V ● V’s home is called the Shadow Gallery ○ All the culture from the past world is there and saved ● Train scene show how physically gifted V is ○ He is quite stealthy and catches them by surprise ● Mr. Finch is the detective assigned to look for V ● Evey does not like to be abandoned which is a severe character flaw ● Gives a back story about what has happened to England ○ All of humanity has been destroyed ● V puts on a Punch mask from the Punch and Judy show ● V puts Prothero’s dolls in concentration uniforms which breaks him ● We find out V is the man from room 5 ● Inklings of change because the Fate voice is different ● V talks to “Madam Justice” (himself) ○ Says she prefers the facist government while he prefers anarchy ○ Then he blows her up ● The Bishop worked at the camp and we see he’s a pedophile ● Rolling Stones reference to show he is the devil ● Poisons the Bishop with Cyanide in the communion wafer ● Dr. Delia is the next victim from the camp ● Cut scene showing Dereck messing with his wife

○ The gun is empty V has poisoned Delia in her sleep and she knows it is the end for her V shows her his real face and she thinks it is beautiful Dereck then shows up with his gun to shoot V ○ The gun is empty still and doesn’t fire Finally gets to the vendetta through the eyes of Dr Delia and her journal They were doing weird hormone experiments at the camp Delia thought his face was ugly when experimenting on him V sets fire to the camp with homemade gunpowder He is out to kill anyone who would know him from the camp...
