Fundamentals of Chemistry 1407 - 610 Summer 2019 Instructor: Rex J. Gamble Office: 424 Phone: 9925 Office Hours: 9-10:00 MW 9-10TTh E-mail: [email protected] Class Room: Science Building Room 112 Books: Introductory Chemistry by Nivaldo J.Tro Fifth Edition (With the Mastering Chemistry access code) 1407 Chemistry, Laboratory Manual by Rex Gamble Course ID code for Mastering Chemistry 1407-010 MTWTh 10:00 – 11:30am NURS 109 is: MCGAMBLE5369438 Equipment: You will need an internet enabled device with the Mastering Chemistry web site bookmarked to do the in class work. Learning Outcomes: This course is aimed at achieving certain outcomes for the student. These outcomes fall into three categories; knowledge, skill, and value. By the end of the semester you should have an understanding of the basic concepts of chemistry, of how these concepts are applied to the real world, and an understanding of the Scientific Method and its applications (knowledge outcome). You will be able to apply chemical concepts to problems, and to perform basic chemical laboratory procedures safely (skill outcome). And you will be able to appreciate the Scientific Method and the role of chemistry in everyday life (value outcome). Disability Services: Students with disabilities may request appropriate accommodations by contacting (Trina Geye) the Director of Student Disability Services in the Math Building Room 201, at (254) 968-9400 or email [email protected]. Absence Policy: Absences due to school related functions or emergences could be made up within one week. I forgot to do the homework is neither a school related function, nor an emergency. This means that you either have to tell me you will be absent before hand (in the case of a school related activity) or you have to inform me of the absence (in the case of an accident or emergency). If you do not inform me of the reason for your absence you

will not be allowed to do any makeup work and you will receive a zero for any work not completed in the time of the absence. Lecture: We will be covering all 19 chapters in the book. Each lecture will follow the general outline of the class notes. I will expound on the subject further as I give examples, work word problems and illustrate points as we proceed. We will do in-class work to aid you in understanding the material. And you will be graded on the in-class work. You will not be tested over any material that has not been covered in lecture or the notes. If you miss a lecture it is your responsibility to acquire any material (handouts, extra notes, etc.) from that lecture. I will not hunt you down and make sure you have everything. And I will not give you make up for the in-class work. At the end of each chapter you will be assigned homework problems. And you will have a chapter test to complete. The lecture average is 50% of your total score for the class. Again, I strongly urge you to come to lecture. Homework: Homework is mandatory. Homework is assigned from the Mastering Chemistry web page. The various homework assignments will be open for approximately a week. (There may be more than one homework open at a time.) You have to complete the homework within this time. You need to log onto the Mastering Chemistry web page using the access code that came with your text book. There will be nineteen (19) homework assignments. The first assignment will be to do the Mastering Chemistry online introduction. Each assignment will be worth 18 points. You may log out of an assignment and then log back in at a later time. The total points for the Homework will be 300, or roughly 32% of your lecture average. To log onto the Mastering Chemistry web site you will need the access code that came with your textbook (or you can purchase it at the Mastering Chemistry web site) and the Course ID code from the top of this syllabus. This will allow you to see the homework assignments. They do not appear all at once, but are activated at certain times. Also, they will not stay up for the entire semester. When they close you will receive an automatic zero if you have not completed the work. You will usually have 1 week to do the homework for any given chapter. Again, homework (both the Mastering Chemistry Homework and the Mastering Chemistry Chapter Tests) are mandatory. Failure to do either or both gets you a failing grade.

Chapter Tests: There is a Chapter Test for each chapter. The tests are mandatory. Like the Homework, the chapter tests will be opened when we finish a chapter and they will stay open for approximately a week. (There may be more than one test open at a given time.) The tests are timed. You will have a fixed time to do each test. You can only open the tests once. When you close the test it will automatically submit. Each test is worth 18 points. The total points from the Chapter Tests are 300 points, or about 32% of your lecture average.

In-class work: As practice and as an incentive to come to class, we will be doing in-class problem solving during the semester. There will be from one to six problems each lecture session. Each is worth five point. Over the course of the semester you will be able to earn 150 points, or about 16% of your lecture average. Yes, in-class work is mandatory. The in-class work is through Learning Catalytics. You must make sure that you are logged onto Learning Catalytics when you purchase the Mastering Chemistry account. The in-class assignments will be done through Mastering Chemistry portal, so please have an internet capable device with the Mastering Chemistry web page bookmarked with you when you come to class. Lecture Tests. There will be two (2) lecture tests during the Spring semester. (Dates for the Lecture tests are approximate and subject to change.) Lecture Test 1 (Chapters 1 thru 9) 1407 – 610 Monday June 3rd Lecture Test 2 (Chapters 10 thru 19) 1407 – 610 Thursday June 20 Each of these tests will be 80 questions long, worth a 100 points each. Lecture tests are worth a total of 200 points or 21% of your total grade.

Grading for Lecture: Lecture average is out of 950 points. Homework = 300 points Chapter Tests = 300 points Lecture Tests = 200 points In-class (Learning Catalytics) = 150 points

Homework, Chapter Tests, In-class work, and Lecture Tests are all MANDATORY.

Text Books: You must buy a copy of the lab manual. There is no way around it. The reason for this is that the lab manual contains exercises that must be handed in at each laboratory session. For the lecture portion you will have to have access to a text book (or an E-text) to do the homework. I VERY STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU EITHER BUY THE TEXT BOOK (NEW, USED, OR AS AN E-COPY), OR THAT YOU RENT THE TEXT BOOK. Your ability to do the homework improves with having the right references. You will also HAVE TO HAVE AN ACCESS CODE FOR THE MASTERING CHEMISTRY WEB PAGE to do your homework. Yes you have to buy one of those. Remember that the Homework is MANDATORY.

Class Note: I have my class notes online. Go to WebCT Blackboard for the class notes. Please make a copy of the class notes and keep them in a three ring binder that you bring to class. That way you can refer to them, highlight passages, and add to the notes as we go along. You will quickly learn that you cannot write down everything that is on the board during class, nor can you write down everything that I say during class. Laboratory: The lab portion of this class will meet once a week. Lab classes will begin on Monday January 22rd. This means that you have to attend lab on the day assigned you on your schedule. If you miss any lab but the very first one, you will have to complete a makeup assignment within a week of the missed lab. All labs will meet in room 401 of the Science Building. Lab is ¼ of the total grade. You must check into lab within no later than Monday, January 29th. If you fail to check into lab you will receive an F for the lab and you will fail both lecture and lab. Laboratory Check-In Schedule 1407 – 510

Monday May 20th at 1:00pm – 4:30pm in Science 401

Attendance: . Classes begin on Tuesday May 15th for 1407-610. Roll is taken through the inclass work. You are to attend lab on time. Also coming to class will help you greatly on the tests. Your attendance in class will be recorded from the in-class work.

Final: The final will be comprehensive and count as ¼ of your total grade. The final exam will take place in regular lecture room. You will need to bring a green scantron, two pencils, and scientific calculator to your final For 1407-610 the final will be on Tuesday June 25th at 10:00am in Nursing 109 Grading for Course Score:

Final Score – You final score for the course is determined by your performance in lecture, lab, and on the final exam. Lecture is 50%, Lab is 25%, and the Final is 25%. Lab average Lecture average x 2 Final

100 points 200 points (doubled the lecture average) 100 points

Possible Total Points

400 points

Grades will be posted every week on Blackboard and on Mastering Chemistry. You can check these online. You Student I.D. number will give you access to your grades.

SI I do not know if there is an SI. Honesty: Tarleton State University expects its students to maintain high standards of personal and scholarly conduct. Students guilty of academic dishonesty are subject to disciplinary action. Academic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, cheating on an examination or other academic work, plagiarism, collusion, and the abuse of resource material. The faculty member is responsible for initiating action for each case of academic dishonesty that occurs in his/her class. If you cheat on a test you will receive a grade of zero for that test and I will deduct 10 points from your final grade. Do it a second time and I will repeat the action and I will speak with the Dean about having you removed from my class. I expect that you will work together on homework and in lab exercises. But, I suggest that you be able to do the work yourself when the test comes. Bonus Point There are 19 Homework assignments, each is worth 18 points. 18 x 19 = 342 Now look back at Grading for Lecture. That heading says you have to score 300 points.

So there are possibly 42 bonus points. If you work for them. There are 19 Chapter Tests, each worth 18 points. 18 x 19 = 342 Now look at Grading for Lecture. You need to score 300 points. Again this means that there are possibly 42 bonus points. If you work for them. For the in class Learning Catalytics you need to score at least 150 points. Each Learning Catalytic session is worth 15 points. And you will at least 20 Learning Catalytic sessions. 20 x 15 = 300 This means there is at least 150 bonus points for Learning Catalytics. If you work for them....
