1. What textual evidences can you cite in the first stanza to indicate that the poem refers to the historic death of Nelson Mandela? The line “So it has arrived, the news of your departure” refers to the historic death on Nelson Mandela. The word departure actually represents Nelson Mandela’s death because the meaning of the departure is leaving and also the word was used metaphorically. 2. The speaker dreams about his professor after the news on Mandela’s death reaches him. Describe the dramatic situation of the speaker’s dream sequence by citing details. After the speaker heard the news of Nelson Mandela’s death, he dreamt that he was in the house of his mentor as a guest who took the desk by the window. It was pretty sad for him; the professor might be someone very important to the speaker that the death of Nelson Mandela reminded him about his professor. 3. The professor is a metaphorical figure in the poem, and it can be seen that the speaker compare the professor to Nelson Mandela. Explain the comparison of the speaker between Nelson Mandela and his professor. The speaker compared Nelson Mandela to his professor because they have the same characteristics, being a good leader and a fighter, someone who guides an individual. 4. Apart from the professor, the speaker mentions the image of a tree seen from the window at the house of the professor. How does it function as an important image in the poem? The image that stands and important role to the poem was the tree. It was because the tree was compared to Nelson Mandela. It was stated in the tree that “There’s no need to name the tree” it means there is no need to recognize or name that tree as long as he remembers how important that tree to his life and how thankful he is to have that tree in his life just like how he felt to Nelson Mandela. 5. Why do you think is naming the tree important for the speaker? Because the mentor of the speaker is going to depart and naming the tree will make the speaker remember the mentor

6. How does the impact of the news on Mandela’s death affect the way the speaker values the presence of his professor? Mandela’s death affects the speaker because he remembers his professor at that time, and also, the speaker made a comparison to his professor and the great Nelson Mandela. 7. With the value and reverence the speaker gives to his professor, including the comparison he makes between the professor and the breath of sparrows, describe how Mandela’s contribution is affirmed and valorized in the African Society? Nelson Mandela taught the world what activism really means. He stood up to those who sought to oppress others. He was willing to give up his own life for the principles of democracy. He fought against white domination and he fought against black domination. He treated everyone equally. Also he became immortal in death. His legacy gives him the breath of eternal life as the impact he made to everyone will never die. Africans must cherish the principles for which he stood: equality, justice, fairness and peace for all. 8. The biography of Nelson Mandela is necessary to understand the historical allusion and references the poem presents. What other information about him might have inspired Jim Pascual Agustin to Recognize and honor him in person? In the poem, it says that he can feel anything without opening his eyes. Maybes he honors him because he’s close to him or he is looking up on him. Aside from that, the poem tells that Nelson Mandela is an observant person. Maybe it became his inspiration for writing a poem for him. 9. How do South Africa and the Philippines share experiences and History? South Africa and Philippines share experiences and history by looking on what Nelson Mandela did to everyone just like the way what our heroes did for our country. They all stood up for everyone’s rights. They fought even if their life is taken just to be freed to the ones who caged us. 10. What can we learn from Mandela and South African history that could be applied in the Philippines?

We can learn the things that Mandela used to fight for their rights especially on what is happening to our country this year. If we apply the things that Mandela did I think we can also fight for every person’s rights....
