Lippincott #5 Sara Lin Robert Mendel Cohort B Opening Questions How did the simulated experience of Sara Lin’s case make you feel? Talk about what went well in the scenario. The simulated experience working with Sarah Lin, made me feel confident, educated, and routine. During the entire simulation I felt in control, prepared, and confident in my care. The patient education aspect went very well, as the nurse it is imperative to address all educational concerns. Reflecting on Sara Lin’s case, were there any actions you would do differently if you were to repeat this scenario? If so, how would your patient care change? In this simulation, my first attempt was almost perfect. I wouldn’t change my approach to my assessment, vitals, and education. The one thing I did not address appropriately was medication administration. I noticed the orders stated “oxycodone 5mg PO - discontinue” i took this as do not give the oxy and give acetaminophen instead. Going back and redoing the simulation I made sure to give all pain meds that were ordered. Scenario Analysis Questions What priority problem(s) did you identify for Sara Lin? Fall risk, postoperative infection, and pain management were three priority problems identified for Sara Lin. What should be included in Sara Lin’s education plan to assist with her pain control? Sara Lin’s pain control education should include; examples of proper patient positioning, appropriate pain medications and schedules, how to start and increase physical activity. Education may also include examples of therapeutic pain management techniques such as hot/cold packs. What should be included in Sara Lin’s education plan related to postoperative incision care? Sara Lin’s education plan related to postoperative incision care may include hygiene, and direct wound care. This may include when/how to change the dressing, signs of infection, and basic wound care cleaning practices. Finally making a follow-up appointment with her provider. In addition to the above education on pain management and incision care, what discharge teaching should be included specific to home antibiotic therapy (levofloxacin/Levaquin)? Home education specific to antibiotics is important to address before discharge. Education should include appropriate dosage, when to take the medication, how to take it (I.e. with food/empty stomach), finishing the entire prescribed course of antibiotics, and finally any adverse effects to monitor for. Concluding Questions Describe how you would apply the knowledge and skills that you acquired in Sara Lin’s case to an actual patient care situation. After completing Sara Lin’s simulation I learned a few skills/knowledge that I will carry with me into actual patient experiences. In particular the importance of completing a through assessment, pain assessment, and gathering all the correct patient education necessary for that particular diagnosis. This simulation confirmed the importance of verifying correct physician orders and whenever in doubt call and confirm correct orders....
