LM290 Placement Week 2 This week: - An overview of the academic debates related to work in the media and creative industries. A Creative Trident: - Higgs, Cunningham and Bakshi (in Ashton, 2015) talk three types of workers engaged in the creative industries: - Specialist - Embedded - Support Hesmondhalgh adapts the analysis of Mengen to answer the question: “Why do more and more people, many of them young, appear to want to work in the cultural industries (Hesmondhalgh, 2019) - A ‘calling’ - Risk-Takers - Psychological rewards (Including recognition) Key areas for Debate: - Creative vs immaterial labour - Precarious, insecure and irregular work. - Emancipation vs self-exploitation - Gendered inequalities - Allen et al (in Ashton, 2015) talk of an industry favouring workers with high levels of social and cultural capital. (Usually seen on Linkedin etc) - The rise of the intern - A lack of specific skills and qualifications, with workers entering the industries from outside media-related higher education courses - A white, male, middle class image problem… - The compelling economic argument - The cultural and personal value of work.
