AY 2019 INSTRUCTIONAL MEMORANDUM NUMBER 476

4 January 2019

MA476 - MATHEMATICAL STATISTICS 1. Purpose: This memorandum provides information and announces lesson assignments for MA476. 2. Text: Mathematical Statistics with Applications, seventh edition by Wackerly, D., Mendenhall, W., and Scheaffer, R. 3. General Instructions: a. Policies and Procedures of the Department of Mathematical Sciences pertaining to third and fourth class core mathematics courses will continue in effect unless amended by the instructor or when obviously not applicable. b. A Written Partial Review will be given at Lesson 20. The Term End Examination will be given during TEE week. 4. Grading: Grading in the course will be based on the following allocation of 1000 points: Instrument TEE WPR Homework Quizzes (2 @ 50pts each)

Percentage 30% (300 points) 20% (200 points) 40% (400 points) 10% (100 points)

5. Scope: This course builds on the foundations presented in the core probability and statistics course to provide a mathematical presentation of the important topics in mathematical statistics. The course begins with a review of basic probability concepts and covers additional topics such as transformations of random variables and moment generating functions. To provide the mathematical basis for much of statistical practice, certain limit theorems and sampling distributions are discussed. The central focus of the course is to gain an understanding and appreciation of the mathematical underpinning of statistics and to apply these concepts to the theory of estimation and hypothesis testing. 6. Chain of Command: The Department of Mathematical Sciences has an open door policy. Your initial attempt to address problems or concerns should go through the chain of command. However, if you are uncomfortable addressing an issue with your instructor, please approach any individual in the chain. If you have any concerns related to respect in the classroom,

unprofessional behavior, or sexual assault or harassment, please feel free to contact the Department Head directly. Below is the chain of command for MA476: a. Your Instructor b. Course/Program Director: COL Krista Watts, Thayer 239A, 938-2276 c. Professor, USMA & Department Head: COL Tina Hartley, Thayer 238A, 938-5285 7. Course Objectives: At the end of this course, students should: a. Understand the important mathematical principles providing the foundation for the study and application of statistics. b. Understand the concept of a random variable and its distribution. Be able to find distributions and moments of random variables that are functions of other random variables. c. Understand the concepts of random sampling and statistics. Know how to derive distributions for defined statistics. d. Understand the theory of point estimation. Be able to use classic techniques to generate point estimates and to check various properties of these estimates. e. Understand the theory of hypothesis testing, including the important concepts of power and likelihood ratio tests. 8. Lesson Assignments: The course syllabus and lesson assignments for each of the three blocks are available on the course website: (https://lms.westpoint.edu/math/ma476/SitePages/default.aspx) 9.
