Running head: Marriage Typologies Essay Marriage Typologies Essay Marriage is something when two people love each other come together and decided to spend the rest of their lives together, through sickness and in health. Marriage can mean different things to different people. As we enter 2021, we are seeing many different types of marriages not just your traditional man and a woman marriage. The purpose of this paper is to, identify six marriage types or similar relationships and to include traditional and nontraditional forms of marriage, to describe for each marriage type what the key components are, identify for each marriage types the advantages and disadvantages. Traditional/Institutionalized Marriage What is considered a traditional marriage in today’s society? According to the textbook, a traditional marriage is between a man and a woman standing beside a witness to join in holy matrimony. (Howe, 2018) We still see the traditional marriage very often because it is a common form of marriage. A traditional marriage is often taught from birth of different religious beliefs. A traditional marriage although is very common has advantages and disadvantages. The advantages of a traditional marriage are being with a person who you love for the rest of your lives. The disadvantages with a traditional marriage can be although you may be with someone who you love everyday of your life, you can lose a sense of individuality, marrying into a hateful family and even lose a lack of sex drive. (Howe, 2018) Covenant Marriage There are six different types of marriages, and the first type of marriage is a covenant marriage. A covenant marriage is when it restricts couples from actually getting divorce. Normally these types of marriages use marriage counseling in order to prevent divorce from occurring. As we have learned from the textbook premarital counseling has may differently benefits for a couple struggling in their relationship. According to a study, couples who have been to premarital

(William, 2003) The disadvantages of a covenant marriage are that divorce becomes extremely difficult. The reason it becomes hard to divorce in a covenant marriage is because it is like being stuck in a loveless marriage. Couples find it hard to leave the other person because they don’t want to hurt them even though it would benefit themselves. In the textbook it states that, in covenant marriages have longer wait periods and can only be approved through drastic situations like adultery, domestic violence and abandonment. (Howe, 2018) Arranged Marriage An arranged married is when their current spouse is chosen for them by a parent and this couple normally has little to no say in who they get to spend the rest of their life with. We typically don’t see arranged marriages that often in the United States we it more commonly in third world countries. In other countries an arranged marriage is seen as a tradition and it would be frowned upon to not get your spouse chosen for you by your own family. For example, an article called ‘I am happy with an arranged marriage’ talks about a woman who got her spouse chosen for her and she is actually happy about it. She believes that arranged marriages gave her a good sense of family involvement. She was thrilled that her family cared enough about her to pick the person who she gets to spend the rest of her life with. (Sapra, 2003) The advantage to an arranged marriage is the spouses are normally fitted together by positive qualities and financial status. (Howe, 2018) The disadvantages to an arranged marriage are, not being able to actually pick for yourself who you want or don’t want to spend the rest of your life with. Having your spouse picked out for you without you really knowing the person first can lead to an unhappy or unsuccessful marriage.

Running head: Marriage Typologies Essay Open Marriage An open marriage is something we do see more commonly among the traditional marriages in the United States. Although it may seem strange to most people, it is actually pretty common. An open marriage is when the couple is open about sleeping or even dating other people while still remaining in that relationship. Both partners in order to be in an open marriage have to agree to being okay with seeing other people while still being married. There are obviously many disadvantages to an open marriage such as not spending enough time with your partner and getting jealous of them spending time or seeing someone else even though they agreed that seeing other people was okay. It can become very difficult for someone to be able to keep up with multiple different partners at once. (Canning, 2018) The advantages to an open marriage are that being in an open marriage forces the partners to be honest with each other. Another advantage is that the couple’s needs are being met in an open relationship they aren’t being bond to just one person. Domestic Partnership Domestic partnerships are a little different than any of the other types of marriages we have talked about previously. A domestic partnership is used to give same-sex couples the rights to a heterosexual marriage. Heterosexual couples have the right to get married just as any other couple out there and before 2015 when gay marriage was finally legal in the United States people couldn’t get married to their loved one before since it was considered illegal. When gay marriage became legal in the United States there has been a controversy about what to do with domestic partnerships now. In some states such as Utah, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama, Alaska and many more states completely got rid of the benefits of domestic partnerships. The whole point of a domestic relationships is to provided advantages to heterosexual couples so that they could

Running head: Marriage Typologies Essay receive the same benefits as a married couple. The disadvantages of a domestic partnerships are even if they received the same benefits as a married couple, they still were never treated the same and they weren’t even recognized as being married. (Howe, 2018) No matter what, it shouldn’t matter gay marriage or no gay marriage everyone deserves the right to get married because they are human beings just like everyone else, why should they get treated any different? Interracial Marriage Interracial marriages are a lot more common than they were 60 years ago. An interracial marriage is when two people in a marriage are of different races. Interracial marriages receive more backlash and discrimination in society then other relationships. An interracial marriage is still holding the same benefits as any other marriage even though it may seem different than other marriages. Which comes to the disadvantage of interracial marriages which is discrimination. Discrimination on interracial marriages is usually when one of the races is unaccepting of them dating another person outside that race. For example, a White woman dating a Black man or a white man dating an Asian woman. One advantage of an interracial marriage is sometimes despite the discrimination is can actually cause for a stronger bond between the relationship. People in an interracial relationship need to ignore the hate and discrimination they receive and stick together throughout the marriage. Another disadvantage of being in an interracial relationship is one partner might not understand what it’s like to be a part of another culture and their beliefs. This could also build trust in the relationship when that partner takes the time to learn more about their spouses’ culture. (Afful, 2015) In conclusion, the purpose of this paper is to, identify six marriage types or similar relationships and to include traditional and nontraditional forms of marriage, to describe for each

Running head: Marriage Typologies Essay marriage type what the key components are, identify for each marriage types the advantages and disadvantages. There are so many different types of marriage typologies and the possibilities are endless. In today’s society marriage means different things to different people, and we see all different kinds of marriages today. It shouldn’t matter what gender you are in order to get married all that should matter is being with someone who you truly love and spend the rest of your life with them and be happy, which is something people in today’s society cannot seem to except because they see them as someone “different”. Everyone is the same and should be treated equal as human beings.
