OVERVIEW

Students are going to begin learning content that will help them analyze shapes and be able to use order of operations to find the area of a shape. Students are going to master this standard by learning the meaning of length, width, and area. This will allow students to be able to accurately calculate the area of a shape. Students will also be learning to calculate the perimeter of a shape by given values of L and W. -- When given 5 problems that require students to correctly calculate the area and the perimeter on any given shape, students will receive at least 4 out of 5 correct, with at least 80% accuracy. --

PHASES

TEACHER GUIDE

-- When given 5 problems that require students to correctly calculate the area of any given shape using LxW, students will be receive at least 4 out of 5 correct, with at least 80% accuracy. --

Length: Students should be able to identify the meaning of length as well as identify it on any given shape. OBJECTIV ES

Width: Students should be able to identify the meaning of width as well as identify it on any given shape. Finding Area/Perimeter: Students will take prior knowledge of Length and Width and use order of operations to find the area of any given shape. Lesson in total: 1 hour 15 mins. Introduction: 10 mins.

TIME

Length: 15 mins. Width: 15 mins. Area/Perimeter: 15 mins. Assessment: 20 mins.

PHASES

TEACHER GUIDE Introduction: SMART Board/Projector/ELMO, student pencil, student worksheet (provided by teacher), student shape manipulatives Length: SMART Board/Projector/ELMO, student pencil, student worksheet, student shape manipulatives

MATERIA LS

Width: SMART Board/Projector/ELMO, student pencil, student worksheet, student shape manipulatives Area/Perimeter: SMART Board, Student White Board, Student Dry Erase marker, Tissue, etc. Assessment: Informal Assessment

Introduction: The teacher will lead the instruction with a short video on length and width and how when multiplied can give you the area of a shape.

Length/Width https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAY1bsazcgM

ACTIVITY

Length: Once the video is complete the teacher will then go over Length. The teacher will then show shapes with all sides having measurements. The teacher will then ask students to identify which side of the shape is considered length and width. The teacher then passes around the shape manipulatives. The teacher is then going to instruct students to become familiar with shapes and how many sides the shapes have to make sure you are accurately collecting the right amount for sides. The teacher will then start a check-up to see how many students actually understand how to correctly identify the length. The teacher will then put shapes on the board and ask the students to write the length on the white board and place it in the air. This will allow the teacher to check in and see where all of the students are.

PHASES

TEACHER GUIDE

The teacher is now going to start with Width.

ACTIVITY CONTINUED …

The teacher is then going to do the same activity as the teacher did with length. The teacher will place shapes on the board and ask for students to write their answer on the white board and place it in the air.

Area/Perimeter: The teacher is then going to have students add all sides of the shape to get the perimeter. The teacher then instructs students that to get the area you have the multiply the length by the width. The teacher is going to do the same activity by having the students find the perimeter and area of any given shapes.

Assessment: The teacher is going to do an informal assessment and have the students do the same activity by all as a class game. Students should already know their preset groups. The group with the most points will be able to pick from the prize box.

REFLECTI ON/NOTE S

Teacher can reflect on student understanding, activity outlines, and or set-up of lessons/activities to see if there are necessary changes to be made after lesson is taught....
