Description

Ebone Nagle Mat 151 November 24, 2020 Elizabeth Legault Pythagorean Theorem Grade: 5th Overview: In this lesson students will learn about the Pythagorean Theorem; a2 +b 2=c 2

After

drawing a right triangle student will add a square on each side of the triangle. At the end of this lesson students will be able to use the theorem in a real life scenario and be able to solve the equation with any given numbers. Learning Objectives: Students will be able to solve the Pythagorean theorem to any triangle and use it in real life scenarios. Time: Intro: 10 minutes Model: 15 minutes Practice: 10 minutes Independent work: 15 minutes Overall: 50 minutes Materials: Pencil, Paper, Ruler, Graph Paper, Colored Pencils, Scissors, Worksheet Activities: Whole Group: As students enter the classroom, they will grab their materials and sit at their desks. Teacher will explain what the tools are for and how they are helpful in studying the Pythagorean theorem. Students will grab their Ruler, Pencil, and Graph Paper and begin drawing a triangle. Students will then use the Colored Pencils to color the sides of the triangle

and then take their Scissors to then cut the triangle out. Students will explain the types of triangles they have created and discuss in their table groups the kind of triangles they made. Students will then place 3 triangles together creating a straight line or 180 degrees and teacher will then explain that no matter what types of triangle you make if you add any three angles together, they will equal 180 degrees, if they are interior angles. Guided Practice: Students will work in groups of two and draw a scalene triangle with given the angles A:30 B: 55 and they will be asked to find C. Students will see they need to find the hypotenuse of side c. students will take 30+55 which equals 85 they will then subtract 18085=95 therefore the third interior angle is 95 degrees. Students will then be given the angles to a equilateral triangle and solve for that and after a few minutes we will come back together and see how they did. Independent work: Students will be given a worksheet to practice what they have learned, and they will work independently to complete the task. https://www.mathaids.com/cgi/pdf_viewer_8.cgi?script_name=pythagoras.pl&data_as=0&missing=0&language=0&memo=&answer=1&x=76&y=26

Assessment: Teacher will monitor the students by listening and watching the way students are working in groups and assisting each other. After completing the lesson I will make a chart on the board saying Got it, Do not Got it, Kind of Got it, to which students will place a sticky note so I know if they are needing more help....
