Description

Kimberly Medina Intro To Contemporary Media Section: 1400 11-30-17 Counterfeit Makeup Market Research

Why does the problem exist? 1. The products are cheaper so buying them is easier. 2. Some people don’t think the products are fake since they look so authentic. According to Dr. Haider Ali from the Open University Business School, “The most obvious factor motivating consumer purchase of counterfeit products is their relatively low price but it is commonly appreciated that such products will be of lower quality than genuine products.” Allure has pointed out that brands have tried avoiding having people buy counterfeit makeup by adding watermarks to their packaging that the false “companies” can’t recreate. Who does it most affect? 1. Female teens and young adults trying to afford high end makeup but financially can’t. 2. Influencers who try to share their makeup reviews are also affected first hand. According to this one website under the name of SavvyandUnbiased , people that are buying these products don’t care about the dangers that come along with it. They only care that its name brand and cheaper. This makes anyone who is trying to save a couple of bucks on makeup a target. Influencers review makeup for those interested. This means they put themselves at risk to test whether or not counterfeit makeup is safe to use. What are possible solutions? 1. Buying makeup products from the brand itself. 2. Buying makeup products from trusted retailers. 3. Buying makeup from brands that are trusted and cheaper in price. According to Allure , beauty brands have attempted to prevent this situation by adding watermarks, holograms, and RFID chips onto their packaging for anti counterfeit reassurance. They also claim that one way to be sure that what you’re buying is the real deal is by purchasing directly from the brand or their trusted retailers such as Sephora and Ulta. Brands like ColourPop, Maybelline, Covergirl, Elf, etc sell makeup that are professional quality and cheaper

in price. They allow the same product quality for less, even though they aren’t Yves Saint Laurent.

Target Audience People at risk of buying these products would be older teenagers and adults who are trying to save some money on high end products that are trending. According to Instagram’s user demographics the highest percentage of the people using their website is in favor of my Market Research. 29% of users are women  . Women are the ones that are buying the makeup sold in places that aren’t considered to be trusted retailers. A lot of makeup influencers are also using instagram to promote other products that bring a lot of attention to this social network. . This goes along with the age group in which we need to address. 53% are in the ages of 18-29  28% of them live in urban areas where these products tend to be sold. Since they are located in these areas they’re more accessible to the counterfeit products than a lot of other people are. 28% of the people using Instagram don’t make a lot of money. This would mean a lot of people using this network would be more tempted to buy fake products rather than the real stuff since it’s a lot cheaper. 31% of those using it have had some college. This goes along with the age demographic. Since the highest percentage of users on the network have had only some college this would show that they’re most likely still young.

There fore my target audience should be: ● Young Adults and Older Teens. ● Those living in urban areas. ● Women between the ages of 18-29.
