Tetracyline antibiotic CATEGORY CLASS ______________________________________________________________________ PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action inhibits bacterial growth by inhibiting translation. It binds to the 30S ribosomal subunit and prevents the amino-acyl tRNA from binding to the A site of the ribosome. It also binds to some extent to the 50S ribosomal subunit

Therapeutic Use Protein synthesis inhibitor, bacteriostatic, inhibits the growth of bacteria and microorganisms

Complications patients hypersensitive to drug, CDAD, use cautiously in patient with renal or hepatic impairment. Avoid using in children younger than 8 years old because it may cause permanent discoloration of teeth and bone growth retardation. Do not use during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary.

Medication Administration PO: obtain specimen for culture and sensitivity tests before first dose

Contraindications/Precautions intracranial HYN, dizziness, headache, sore throat, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, hepatotoxicity, bone growth retardation in children younger than 8, hypersensitivity reactions, increased pigmentation, photo sensitivity reactions

Interactions drug-drug:antacids, laxatives, multivitamins containing aluminum magnesium or calcium. digoxin, ferrous sulfate, iron, penicillins, hormonal contraceptives, drug-herb:st. Johns wort drug-food:dairy products drug-lifestyle: sun exposure

Nursing Interventions make sure to check expiration date, do not expose drug to light or heat, monitor for signs and symptoms of superinfection. monitor for signs and symptoms of benign intracranial hypertension. check patients tongue for signs of candidal infection. Drug is not indicated for treatment of neurosyphilis.

Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness resolution of signs and symptoms of infection. Determine if the infection has been controlled and that no side effects have occurred.
