Being an Active Listener
Active listening promotes mindful thinking. It can also help build a stronger relationship between two individuals as it helps them engage in conversation, especially in times like this where everything is held online. Teachers need to remember that deep listening involves engagement, and therefore more talking isn’t always better. Although a good teacher, is a good communicator, too much information at times can seem hectic. It is important to keep lessons concise and engage in more questions and answers, as you do, to help encourage a deeper understanding of the topic. However, in my personal opinion, having a Nearpod tab open as well as the lecture is a bit distracting. It forces us to pay attention to two separate things rather than one which causes students to be selective listeners. Here are some strategies that help promote active listening as a professor: • • • • • • •
Eliminating distractions Sorting Information Being sincerely interested in what the other person is talking about Being patient with others Stating your own views after you have listened Paying attention to your facial expressions Practicing empathy skills
By being an active listener, we will be able to maximize our time in class, build a greater relationship between teachers and students as best as we can with our current situation, allow us to build our communication skills with one another, there will be a lower level of anxiety within the classroom and as a whole we will have a stronger sense of empathy....
