BUSI 1020 - TED Talk Assignment Today, TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to spreading ideas on limitless subjects, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or less). You can watch thousands of recorded TED Talks at www.TED.com. If you have chosen to do the TED Talk as one of your optional assignments for BUSI 1020, you will complete two TED Talk assignments this semester, each worth 10% of your final grade. The first assignment is due Friday, February 5 at 11:59pm. The second assignment is due Friday, March 5 at 11:59pm. For each assignment, you will select a TED Talk and you will complete two parts. Part A consists of creating a Planning Outline for the TED Talk you have selected. Part B consists of writing an analysis for the TED Talk you selected. Note: Part A and Part B will be about the same TED Talk. To begin, select one of the following TED Talks to analyze: • •

Nancy Duarte - “The Secret Structure of Great Talks" https://www.ted.com/talks/nancy_duarte_the_secret_structure_of_great_talks Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie - “The Danger of a Single Story” https://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_ngozi_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story? referrer=playlist-the_most_popular_talks_of_all Amy Cuddy - “Your Body Language May Shape Who You Are” https://www.ted.com/talks/amy_cuddy_your_body_language_may_shape_who_you _are?language=en Simon Sinek - “How Great Leaders Inspire Action” https://www.ted.com/talks/simon_sinek_how_great_leaders_inspire_action? referrer=playlist-the_most_popular_talks_of_all Kareem Yusuf - “The Importance of Emotional Tone in the Digital Age” https://www.ted.com/talks/kareem_yusuf_the_importance_of_emotional_tone_in_the_dig ital_age Julian Treasure - “How to Speak So People Want to Listen” https://www.ted.com/talks/julian_treasure_how_to_speak_so_that_people_want_t o_listen?referrer=playlist-the_most_popular_talks_of_all

PART A: Follow the instructions below to complete your TED Talk Outline Create a planning outline for your selected TED Talk using the format presented on page 463 in Figure 14-4 (Effective Outline for a 30-Minute Presentation) of the textbook. • You may need to watch the TED Talk several times to create your outline. • In your outline, remember to include the title, speaker’s name, presentation purpose, introduction, body, and close with clear transitions. • Your planning outline should be 1-2 pages in length. • You may use bullet points (like you see in the example on page 463 in Figure 14-4 of the textbook), but include enough detail so that the reader can understand the points presented.

BUSI 1020 - TED Talk Assignment PART B: Follow the instructions below to complete your TED Talk Analysis After you have created your outline, watch your TED Talk again, but this time, critically think about the presentation’s effectiveness and take notes as you go. • Consider the following questions while you watch: Purpose: • What is the main point of the speaker’s presentation? • How clearly is the purpose articulated? Audience: • Who is the intended audience for this presentation (i.e. who would benefit the most from listening to this presentation)? • How well does the speaker adapt to their audience? • Has the speaker clearly articulated WIIFM? Organization: • Is the presentation easy to follow, with adequate transitions to link the important pieces together? • Is there a clear introduction, body and close? • Does the speaker captivate the audience’s attention in the opening? Are their final remarks memorable in the close? • Does the discussion unfold in a logical and interesting sequence? Development: • How does the speaker build their credibility? • Is adequate evidence, examples, and reasoning provided to support important points? • What facts and other evidence does the speaker provide to support his/her claims? Pathos/Logos: Pathos is an appeal to emotions (everything from humour to horror) in order to sway an audience Logos is the use of data/evidence to prove one’s case. • Did this speaker rely more on pathos or logos in his/her presentation? • What argument/point in this presentation did you find the most compelling? Why? Clarity/Accuracy: • Is the word choice precise and vivid? • Was the presentation easy to understand? Were any parts of the presentation confusing as a result of the language used? Delivery: • If there are visual aids, are they compelling? Relevant? Distracting? Confusing? • Is the performance poised and engaging? • How well does the speaker use their voice to engage their audience? (Consider vocal expression, volume, tone, pace, etc.)

BUSI 1020 - TED Talk Assignment • Does the speaker use non-verbal communication effectively? (Consider eye contact, facial expression, gestures, movement, posture, etc.) • Does the speaker show passion for the topic? • Use the prompts above to help you write a short analysis essay (2 -3 pages double-spaced). • You do not need to answer all the questions listed! They are just there to get you thinking. • Use specific references from the TED Talk to help you develop your points. • Note: Don’t just summarize what happens in the presentation - remember to analyze whether the use of the elements was effective or not, and explain why you think that way. • Read over your assignment several times to proofread for mistakes in grammar, word choice, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. • Once you are satisfied with the final draft of your assignment, you should upload it to the Canvas dropbox before the deadline....
