Rayven Conner December 8, 2017 PSYC 306 The Sibling Bond After watching Jeffrey Kluger’‘s ted talk “The Sibling Bond“ I have become more aware of the psychological impact that sibling relationships have on one another. As Kluger starts of his presentation mentioning how presidents brothers had a hard time living in their brother shadow. First, Ted Roosevelt's brother, Elliott, had a hard time keeping up with him. As a result, Elliot had suffered many addiction which resulted in the ending of his life earlier than expected. Also, Kluger mentions John Kennedy and his sibling relationship with his brother Bobby. He states that although Bobby would do anything for John, when John dies it seems as though a weight has been lifted off his shoulders. Another main point that Kluger emphasized is that our

siblings are the only ones who are with us for the entire ride of our lives, when our parents leave us or companions/children come to us late in our lifetime. Finally, he informs us about favoritism in parents. Approximately 95% of parents have a favorite and according to Kluger the other 5% are lying. This Ted Talk relates to our textbook as Kluger mentions the sibling bond is the longest lasting relationship we have. In Chapter 15 you can see that Cicirelli, Connidis, Greif & Woolley all agree. They thought of this has the relationship that links us to individuals who share many of our genes and experiences throughout our lives (2015). Also sibling are always competing with each other as they build their lives. I can relate to this as I am the oldest with one younger sister. We grew up playing soccer and always competing who had the best team and who won the most games as we grew older it was becoming more difficult for my younger sister to keep up with me in the

classroom and on the field. Today she is struggling as a senior to keep up with her school work and as a result she has retired from soccer. But, now that we are older we have grown closer together and have an unbreakable bond. In conclusion, one should appreciate their siblings as they help build character and they are the ones who will always be there for you throughout your life....
