Stella Young -nominated at 15 for a community achievement award, but parents said she didn’t do anything exceptional (nothing if you took disability out of the equation) -student had only viewed PWD as object of inspiration -disability is not a bad thing, but it’s also not exceptional in any way -images meant to inspire non-disabled are “inspiration porn”: they objectify one group of people for the benefit of another group of people -”however bad my life is, it could be worse: i could be that person -people with disability are using their bodies to its fullest capacity- they more likely have to overcome society’s stigmas and lack of help rather than their own physical impairment -the disabled have adapted to themselves: they are learning to cope with the limited physical construction created by the nondisabled. Example: charging their phone by the battery of their wheelchair, or using tongs as “grabbers” -the lie of heroism is an injustice that makes life harder for people with disabilities -”no amount of smiling at a flight of stairs has ever made it turn into a ramp” or staring at TV make closed captions appear, concentrating in a book shop does not turn print to braille -dream world: people with disabilities are seen as the norm rather than the exception, that there aren’t such low expectations for the disabled -disability doesn’t make you exceptional, but questioning what you think you know about disability does...
