Description

Melanie Flores Professor De Los Rios Eco 211-03 2 April 2018 Ted Talk 3 As I know, In Eco 211 there was a lecture about unemployment. Unemployment occurs when a person who is actively searching for employment is unable to find work. Unemployment is often used as a measure of the health of the economy. In this TED Talk “Why Jobs Of The Future Won’t Feel Like Work,” By David Lee says that we should start designing jobs that unlock our hidden talents and passions, the things we spend our weekends doing to keep us relevant in the age of robotics. Lee’s main point is that we should be able to have fun at work and be able to feel like they are not even working. Another point that Lee makes is that we should be able to go to work and be able to be creative and expressive. In this Ted Talk Lee states, “But I believe that if we start taking steps right now to change the nature of work, we can not only create environments where people love coming to work but also generate the innovation that we need to replace the millions of jobs that will be lost to technology. I believe that the key to preventing our jobless future is to rediscover what makes us human, and to create a new generation of human-centered jobs that allow us to unlock the hidden talents and passions that we carry with us every day” (2:41-2:47). He basically wants everyone want to have their perfect dream job, instead of future technology ruin peoples chances and opportunities. This topic relates to class in many ways because there was a lecture about unemployment and the different types of unemployment. We also discussed some facts about unemployment. For example, the 3 different types of unemployment is Structural, Fictional, and Cyclical. Some facts that we found out about

were, “ Since 1960, the average unemployment rate in the United States has been about 6 percent. During the Great Recession, the unemployment rate was over 10 percent. Since, it has fallen back to below pre-recession levels.” Unemployment is important for the economy’s health. At the end of the TED Talk, Lee ends his talk by stating, “ I believe that the jobs of the future will come from the minds of people who today we call analysts and specialists, but only if we give them the freedom and protection that they need to grow into becoming explorers and inventors. If we really want to robot-proof our jobs, we, as leaders, need to get out of the mindset of telling people what to do and instead start asking them what problems they're inspired to solve and what talents they want to bring to work.” I believe that is a powerful ending because Lee is basically stating that us as people have to make a change and not let future technology take over their jobs. We as people have to stand for what we really want as a society....
