Description

MGMT1001 – Communication Assessment Notes Topic: Diagnostic Procrastination Video 1: Ted Talk: Inside the mind of a master procrastinator – Tim Urban Time Urban: Hypothesis that the brains of procrastinators were actually different than the brains of other people. To test this, he found an MRI lab that let him scan both his brain and the brain of a proven non-procrastinator. Brain of a non-procrastinator: Rational Decision-Maker Procrastinator: Instant Gratification Monkey + Rational Decisions-maker The instant gratification monkey lives entirely in the present moment, has no memory of the past, no knowledge of the future and only cares about two things: easy and fun Rational Decision-Make: We can visualise the future, see the big picture, make long term plans ---take all of that into account and do whatever makes sense to be doing right now Whatever makes sense === sometimes theres an overlap between both like going to bed, having dinner or well earned-leisure time. FOR PROCRASTINATORS: When a task comes  go to leisure side, where the fun u have, isn’t actually fun as the air is filled with guilt, dread, anxiety, self-hatred = PANIC MONSTER suddenly wakes up anytime a deadline gets too close or there’s danger of public embarrassment or another scary consequence. = WROTE A BLOG (Wait, but why) AND GOT THOUSANDS OF EMAILS AS A RESPONSE WITH PEOPLE RELATING – all different kinds of people around the world but what struck out, “light tone of the post and the heaviness of these emails”- people were writing with intense frustration. TURNS OUT = theres two kinds of procrastination: - Deadlines = effects of procrastination are contained to the short term because the panic monster gets involved - No deadlines: e.g. if you wanted a career where you’re a self-starter, something in arts or entrepreneurial – no deadlines because nothing’s happening until you’ve gone out and done the hard work. Other important things outside your career, like seeing your family and taking care of your health, working on your relationship or getting out of a relationship that isn’t working. IF the procrastinator’s only mechanism of doing these hard things is PANIC MONSTER = PROBLEM as the effects of procrastination are not contained but just extend outward forever. It’s this long term procrastination that is much less visible and talked about than the funnier, short-term deadline- based kind. Usually suffered quietly and can lead to long-term unhappiness, and regrets. HE doesn’t think non-procrastinator’s exist = don’t have to be a mess or have a bad relationship with deadlines but its when the deadlines aren’t there – ‘LIFE CALENDAR’ =everyone is procrastinating on something in life

INTERNET ARTICLE NOTES ON TALK Procrastinators fall prey to the instant gratification monkey, a feeling that encourages fun tasks over productive, sensible ones. Urban says that everyone procrastinates, but that deadline driven procrastination differs from situational procrastination. “The frustration is not that they couldn’t achieve their dreams, it’s that they weren’t even able to start chasing them” A Dark Playground and a Monkey: Urban skilfully uses metaphor when he describes the wasted time during procrastination as a “dark playground,” conveying both the aim for fun and the negativity in only two words. Near the end, Tim states that eventually everyone will be a procrastinator, but the severity varies greatly. Urban explains how procrastination occurs in one’s head....
