Notes for Ted Talk Summary: Kelly McGonigal discusses the idea of stress in a different manner. As a psychologist, McGonigal previously attempted to make people rid themselves of stress completely because she avoided the positive effects of stress. She has realized that people who experience stress, but do not believe it is harmful, are not affected by stress. Much of the harm that comes from stress is mainly due to the way that people perceive it. By conducting many studies, Kelly discovered that when people learn to view their stress as a beneficial thing, they are able to use their stress response as a way to rise up and confront the situation. The normal effects of stress including sweating, increased heart rate, and increased breathing typically lead people to believe they are in danger, however, McGonigal wants to teach people to realize these effects are actually beneficial and allow your body to perform to its peak ability. Because of this new view on stress, Kelly believes that people should chase meaning in their lives regardless of a possible stressful situation, rather than simply searching for one’s comfort zone. -182,000 people died last year and blamed it on “stress” -Stress should not be seen as anxiety attacks but as excitement, the pounding heart is because of the excitement -Doesn’t want people not to stress at all but to be better at stress -Oxytocin protects the body against stress, it helps the heart heal from an stress induced hormones -^This hormone is released through human connection such as hugging, cuddling, etc -Financial struggles and other family related issues forced a 30% increased chance of dying
