Module 5 Short Responses – Question 1 In the space below, specify which historical lens you'd like to use for this exercise.

For this exercise, I would like to use a social lens so that I can look closely at how the education systems of African American children were prompted.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 2 Next, formulate a research question about the civil rights movement (historical time from 1954 – 1968), using the lens you've chosen.

How did the laws, as well as the obstruction the South put in place disrupt education for the African American youth?

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 3 First, go back and review the research question you developed in Step 1. For Step 2, first name two different primary sources that you might use to answer that question. Be as specific as you can. Your primary sources should be found using the Shapiro Library.

The first source that I would use is: Kotlowitz, Alex. There Are No Children Here. New York: Paw Prints, 2009. Print. "Study: White and black children biased toward lighter skin". The reason that I chose this source is because it is a photograph based on a protest of African Americans who were protesting for segregation in public schools. The second source that I would use is: Tallahassee Democrat headline for segregation ban - Tallahassee, Florida. 1954. Black & white photoprint. State Archives of Florida, Florida Memory. I chose this source because it is a photograph that was a part of a newspaper article from 1954, based on the Brown vs. school board case.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 4 Next, name two different secondary sources you could use to answer your research question. Again, be as specific as you can. Your secondary sources should be found using the Shapiro Library.

Gatewood, W. B. (2000). Trouble in Mind: Black Southerners in the Age of Jim Crow. African American Review, 34(1), 151–152.

Duck, L. A. (2016). The Jim Crow Routine: Everyday Performances of Race, Civil Rights, and Segregation in Mississippi. African American Review, 49(2), 169–171.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 5 Construct a thesis statement that provides an answer to the research question you posed in Step 1. Base your response on the historical evidence that's been presented in this course so far, as well as any research you may have done on your own.

African Americans were withheld equal education throughout the Civil Rights Movement. Numerous African Americans marched forward to battle for equal rights. An example of these battles includes Brown vs. Board of Education, a particular case fought to seek equal educational opportunities.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 6 Name three specific historical events that can be considered contributory causes of the passage of the Voting Rights Act. Briefly explain why you believe each of these events contributed to the passage of the Act.

The first event would be Bloody Sunday. Bloody Sunday was when nonviolent protestors were killed and that caused distraught around the African American community and helped to play a role in the Voting Rights Act. Secondly, MLK's arrest was an event that was also a contributory cause of the passage of the Voting Rights Act. The reason I included this event is because it helped gain more support for the civil rights movement because of MLK being an idol. Lastly, the assassination of John F. Kennedy was also a contributory cause. Seeing the type of man that JFK was and how he tried his best to support and accommodate the African American community plays a major role in the Voting Rights Act passing.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 7 Based on what you read about the passage of the Voting Rights Act on Page 1 of this learning block, name one event that was part of the course of this bill's passage by Congress.

An event that was part of the course of this bill's passage by congress was Brown vs Board of Education in 1954.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 8 Name three specific consequences caused by the passage of the Voting Rights Act.

Mercedes Rios

Consequences caused by the passage of the Voting Rights Act include an immediate increase in African American voter registrations occurring and increasing their representation in Congress, the Justice Department reversed laws and regulations, as well as racial violence decreasing.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 9 One of these scholars relied heavily on evidence about the substance of today's political debate. Which scholar was that? What sort of evidence did he use?

Pildes relied heavily on evidence about the substance of today's political debate from the use of scholarly articles.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 10 One of these scholars relied heavily on evidence about the political process. Which scholar was that? What sort of evidence did he use?

Kennedy relied heavily on evidence about the political process and used historian's quotes.

Module 5 Short Responses – Question 11 1. What is the topic of this essay? Does the author make it clear in the introduction? 2. What is the author's thesis? 3. What kind of sources and evidence do you think the author will use to support his thesis?

The topic of the essay is that of a group of students and their efforts to desegregate public facilities through a sit-in protest. In my opinion, the topic is clearly stated in the introduction. The thesis of the essay is. "By examining the effort to desegregate public facilities through the lens of the first sit-in in Charleston, this article will demonstrate how a small, committed group of local high school students and teachers played an integral, though overlooked, role in the civil rights movement". I believe that the author will use articles and interviews that were conducted, as well as any police reports to support his thesis....
