Expected Pharmacological Action Raise the levels of norepinephrine and dopamine into the central nervous system.
Therapeutic Use ADHD in children and adults.
Complications CNS stimulation cuasing insomnia and restlessness. Weight loss related to reduced appetite; growth suppression. Dysrhythmias, chest pain, high blood pressure. Hallucinations and paranoia. Withdrawal reaction. Hypersensitivity to transdermal patches. Toxicity causing dizziness, palpitations, HTN, hallucinations and seizures.
Medication Administration Give last dose of the day before 1600. Give with food or after meals to promote adequate food intake. DC MAOIs at least 14 days before beginning.
Contraindications/Precautions History of substance use disorder, cardiovascular disorder, severe anxiety, and psychosis.
Interactions MAOIs can cause hypertensive crisis. Caffeine can cause increase in CNS stimulation. Phenytoin, warfarin, and phenobarbital have metabolism decreased, leading to toxic blood levels. OTC cold and decongestant can increase CNS stimulation.
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Improvment of symptoms of ADHD. Increased ability to focus and complete tasks, interact with peers, and manage impulsivity.

Nursing Interventions Monitor hieght and weight for changes. Monitor vitals and ECG. Treat hallucinations with chlorpromazine. Treat seizures with diazepam.
Client Education Reduce caffeine intake. Immediately report any psychotic manifestations. Avoid stoping the medication abruptly. Avoid OTC cold and decongestant medications. Full response to medication can take up to 6 weeks....
