Description

MGT 314; SPRING 2018 Instructor: Shah Iftekhar Hossain Group Activity & Management Guidelines In professional and academic environs, projects are team activities. The management of group dynamics, especially ensuring the equal/fair contribution of all members and avoidance of the "free rider" problem, is critical for business students and professionals. Depending on the final number of students in the class, the students will be divided into groups of 6-8 students. These groups are very important to achieving the course objectives, as well as your final grade. In these groups, you will be working on the following assignments: (i) the course Final Project, and (ii) the Case Study. You are expected to work as a team to complete, present, and submit these assignments. The Final Project will take the forms of an in-class presentation and a formal report. The Case Study analysis is a report Each group will be an autonomous work team. Fellow group members will help each other with master course material and concepts by working together on your assigned Case Study and the Final Project. You will need to develop strong working relationships with other group members so that you can help and learn from each other. Please remember that the group deliverables constitute up to 35% of your final grade in the classroom. The quality of your group deliverables will significantly influence your grade. Your assessment in these two categories will be the assessment for the entire group, although I will adjust your assessment given your level and quality of involvement in the group activities. As soon as your group is formed, elect a Project Manager. The Project Manager will be responsible for these critical activities:  Team coordination  Timely submission of required material to the instructor.  Communicating with the instructor.  Peer Evaluation. The Project Manager will be required to submit a confidential and critical evaluation of team members – this is the “Peer Evaluation.” Only the Project Manager will submit a Peer Evaluation. Your scores in the various group activities will be adjusted based the Peer Evaluation. Elect a Project Manager who will be fair, critical, objective, and mercilessly honest. The Project Manager will have a very strong influence on your final grade. Also, the election of the Project Manager is a one-time activity, i.e., you may not replace your Project Manager. Treat the Project Manager as if s/he is your “boss” for this project. A poor rating in your peer evaluation will result in lower marks for the Final Project and the Case Study. If the Project Manager indicates that one or more group member(s) have had minimal or no contribution towards the group activities, those group member(s) shall receive zero(s) for all group activities. The group activities will take place outside the classroom. Plan to meet frequently. The groups are independent and are completely responsible for its activities and work products. The instructor will not adjudicate any disagreements and/or poor relationships within the group, especially between group members and the Project Manager.
