The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has rapidly spread across the globe, causing massive disruptions to everyday life especially after the declaration of a global pandemic in our country in the second week of March 2020. The pandemic certainly has the potential to affect students as well through physically, academically, financially and psychologically. In order to prevent widespread transmission of the COVID-19 virus among all population, higher education institutions across the country have switched from face to face to online learning. In a short period of time, college students’ lives have dramatically changed as they have been asked to leave campus and adapt to online learning platforms. The switch to online learning most likely has increased stress among students.

Stress can be defined as an adaptive response to a situation that is perceived as challenging to the person’s wellbeing. Stress also is a physiological and psychological condition that prepares us to adapt to hostile or harmful environmental conditions. As a student, I am able to recognize this coronavirus pandemic situation can be seen as challenging and affecting my well-being as a student. There are different types of stress which are eustress and distress. Eustress motivates people to achieve goals and succeed in life’s challenges while distress is the degree of physiological, psychological and behavioural deviation from healthy functioning. At the beginning of the semester, I can feel that I am experienced high level of distress. This is because before the new semester started, various thoughts have been brings me anxiety to complete my new semester 5 as UiTM has announced that this semester will be carried out through online distance learning again. I feel a little disappointed and demotivated as I hoped that I can meet and study together with my friends through face to face. However, as I reach my mid semester break, I feel motivated to achieve good result at the end of this semester because all my various thoughts have proof me wrong. I feel excited whenever to join class session because this semester my lecturers are kind and guide my classmates and I to achieve new knowledges. My performances in doing exercise and tutorials are getting better each day. I can feel that my distress level decreased and my eustress level is increasing towards final examination.

Stressors are the causes of stress of any environmental condition that places a physical or emotional demand on the person. As a student that going through online-distance learning, I can identify some of the stressors that become the causes of stress during my study session at home. Firstly, Academic stressors which can be affected by attending classes, completing the tutorials, preparing video presentations, managing projects, and preparing for exams all put a heavy burden on me as a student. However, I believe that academic stressor can improve me as I found that one of the keys of dealing with academic stress is having good study habits and a time-management system. The second stressor can be found is Financial Stressor. This stressor affected me by paying a lot of my study cost as it is continuing to rise and placing increasing pressure on me. For example, I have to use part of my own saving money to repair my laptop, buying limited stocks of books trough website and subscribe monthly internet data as it is important for me to attending class. This have made me to carefully monitoring my money saving for the semester.

Despite having several stressors, I also find out several approaches to manage stress. Firstly, as a student I should be getting enough sleep. Maintaining a sleep routine is to maintain mental health and managing stress. Before sleep, I will avoid screen time by switch off my laptops and phones. Seven to eight hours of sleep is recommended as this will giving us time to relax. By this I am able to stay focused when there is lecture session. My second approach is by talking to someone. My routine is, I will meet my friends during weekends. During the outing, I will speak to my friends and families. I believe that they know me best and care about me the most. This can be my therapy or counselling session to express my feelings and problems during my study.

In conclusion, it is important for students to know how to manage their stress very well as we know that stress can be harmful to them. Stress is just one of the many challenges that students experience. Short-term stress can help them to raise a grade, increase their knowledge. However, long-term stress if not addressed, can have unfavourable side effects. The most important thing that I learnt to handle stress is to keep a positive mindset because by doing this, positive things will keep on approaching is easily.
