Möbius Orientation Instructions for ECON*2770(DE01)(DE02) (including Syntax) Instructor: M. Hoy

Fall 2020

BEFORE YOU BEGIN 1)

Check the System Requirements document.

Find this at https://www.digitaled.com/products/system-requirements 2)

Update your Java: before you begin AND repeatedly throughout the semester.

3)

Please set your browser to accept cookies and pop ups.

4)

URL for login to Möbius: https://uoguelph.mobius.cloud

5)

Login using your U of Guelph username and password.

6)

If you are unable to login or do not see the course ECON*2770 Introductory Mathematical Economics F20 Michael Hoy, then contact Prof. Hoy ASAP so you can have access to the course.

*For Students: Instructors may require that students take a test in the Möbius Proctored Browser Mode. The Proctored Browser Mode is available with Google Chrome and Firefox only. You will be informed about this at the beginning of the course.

USING Möbius 1)

Each assignment will appear in 3 flavours: Any assignment called PRACTICE is NOT graded and can be tried indefinitely during the time that it is open. It will also have the feature that you can see how you did immediately after each question, by simply clicking on: How did I do? PRACTICE assignments are immediately followed by a GRADED version. For the GRADED version, you must go through the entire assignment and grade it before you can see how you did. For each graded assignment, you will have a maximum of five attempts and your best one will count for marks. These are broken up into two parts (A and B) to allow you to achieve higher marks. The final assignment version is called REVIEW and is NOT graded. It operates like a PRACTICE assignment and is to help you prepare for Quizzes. Just like PRACTICE assignments, it has the feature that you can see how you did immediately after each question, by simply clicking on: How did I do?

2)

I recommend you do a couple of “Practice” tests to prepare for the assignment and also a couple of “Review” tests to prepare for quizzes. But do even more if you feel it would help you. Use “How did I do?” to check your answers on the go.

3)

Now you are ready for prime time. You should be able to get perfect on an assignment in one or two attempts. For each assignment you will be allowed FIVE attempts. Only your BEST mark will count.

4)

DO NOT LEAVE AN ASSIGNMENT UNTIL THE LAST DAY IT IS OPEN! It is your responsibility to complete the assignment in a timely fashion. If many of you leave it until the last minute, you will jam up the U of G server, Möbius, and frustrate yourselves and others. Even if the system does not crash outright, it will respond FRUSTRATINGLY slowly. DO NOT LEAVE IT UNTIL THE LAST DAY THE ASSIGNMENT IS OPEN!

5) ALWAYS GRADE YOUR ASSIGNMENT WHEN YOU ARE FINISHED. If you didn’t do all questions when you grade, Möbius will inform you. Then you MUST click grade again, if you are done. If you click, “View Details”, you will see your entire assignment and be given the option of printing it. 6)

You do not have to complete an assignment in one sitting; questions completed can be saved by clicking “QUIT AND SAVE”, and then reopened at a later time for completion. Always “QUIT AND SAVE” after you finish an assignment whether it is graded or practice or review. In this way, all your attempts are saved in the system and you can retrieve and view them at any time.

7)

You may switch from math entry mode to symbolic math by clicking the icon beside the answer field. ALWAYS UPDATE YOUR JAVA!! However, please be warned that at times the symbolic math entry mode can have some problems. Please let us know about instances when it fails. And in that case it is better to use math entry.

8) Always include arithmetic operations. For example, don’t enter xy when you mean x*y (Möbius will treat xy as a single symbol.). Use brackets generously, but only “(“ and “)”. No other kinds of brackets are understood by Möbius. Please pay attention to those extra instructions you may find in some of the questions. 9)

Möbius times out after approximately 15 minutes of inactivity. We are working on increasing the duration of time before time out kicks in. In the meantime, in order to prevent time out (and risk losing all the work that you have done on an assignment), you should from time to time keep the program active by simply moving your mouse or any such thing.

Finally on the next page, the syntax …

TEXT ENTRY SYNTAX (similar to calculator syntax) Keep this sheet with you whenever you work on an assignment.

Math Expression

Möbius math entry syntax

x*y;

x/y

x^y

a/(b*c) or TA likes a/b/c (but I don't)

xy  1

x*((y)^(-1))

sqrt(x) or x^(1/2)

Do not use x^.5!

x^(2/3)

abs(x)

ln(x);

;

;

exp(x);

e or exp(1); pi ; infinity

EQUATION EDITOR SYNTAX (Symbolic Entry)

The syntax for the equation editor is the same syntax except that you can see the expression you have entered with the proper format. Möbius, and equation editor in particular, relies heavily on Java. Update your Java!!

An important thing to note is that you must always understand where your cursor is, and you must use the arrow keys or tab or mouse to move the cursor to the desired location. Please watch this! For example, it is very easy to leave the cursor in the exponent and continue typing the rest of your expression -- only to find that everything that you typed is taken to be part of the exponent.

Use the arrow keys to navigate in the math expression, make any corrections as you wish....
