Module 02 Assignment – Theories Guiding Nursing Practice Instructions Scenario:You are working as a Registered Nurse at a local hospital that has recently changed ownership. The new owners of the hospital are committed to a culture that embraces evidence-based practice (EBP) and utilizes EBP as a guide for their policies and procedures. The focus on evidence-based practice can be seen as part of the hospital’s mission statement and local advertising campaign which states, “Evidence-based practice: The key to advancing quality and safety in healthcare.” While the hospital mission includes the statement: “…to be the healthcare center of choice, through superior clinical outcomes, evidence-based practice-driven protocols, and the advancement of practice utilizing formal and continuing education.”The hospital leadership team has shared that they are beginning the process of applying for Magnet status as a healthcare facility. They have asked for volunteers to serve on a sub-committee to select a nursing theorist as a framework that will be used to guide nursing practice. You have been asked to research the various nursing theorists, and select two to present to the leadership team. Content: From the list provided, select two nursing theorists. Jean Watson is a nursing theorist known for her theory of human caring. Throughout many nursing theories, caring tend to be seen in some form, as most routinely associate caring with nursing. Watson’s work supports how caring, and loving is a lifestyle and commitment in her professional and personal life. For Watson to do so, she emphasizes on the importance to cultivate personal practices such as mindfulness to perform the act of caring; in other words, one must do so and live out the paradigm of caring in daily life to effectively practice it. The practice of mindfulness can be cultivated within any spiritual belief, or even the absence of; it is not religion specific. Caring is defined as showing concern or kindness for others, or as the practice of looking over those who are unable to care for themselves (DICTIONSRY). For Watson, rather than to oversee one’s health and care for, her practice is taking caring to a more intimate level to connect with the inner life and spirit of others with full attention. When a connection between the nurse and patient is made at a spiritual level, it allows opportunity for healing and human connection on a deeper level than the physical “caring” interaction. Thus, providing a more holistic treatment when embracing the positive energy that flows from an integrated mind, body and spirit and is mutually rewarding to bothe the nurse and patient. Imogene King is also a nursing theorist who is known for her theory of Goal Attainment. King identifies health as the involvement of one’s life experiences, such as adjusting to internal and external environmental stresssors and how they react or utilize available resources. In King’s theory, a nurse is considered part of the patient’s environment. The theory of Goal Attainment involves the interaction of three systems (personal, interpersonal, and social), each given different concepts. To achieve goal attainment, action, reaction and interaction must occur. Examples would be the initial nurse assessment, the theory states that this is completed through patient interaction. Once the nurse

gathers data on growth and development, perception of seld and current health status, communication between the nurse and patient is vital to claifiy accuracy of perception. This will then allow for the two to set goals and explore and agree on means to achieve goals. mindfulmess Prepare a written proposal that compares and contrasts the two theories and makes a recommendation for which theory would be a better fit for the facility. Please include the following in your proposal: Identify the two selected theorists and briefly summarize each theory. Compare and contrast the two selected theories. Jean Watson and Imogene King both show a compassion for nursing within their nursing theories by primarily focusing on the patient and the relationship to be had with them. Watson and King represent a team-like structure between the nurse and patient in their theory models, emphasizing the importance of environment, interaction, communication, and its ability for transaction to attain a desired outcome. Cultivating the practice of mindlessness being fully present and attaining patient goals as a team by building a relationship with your patient are both beneficial to enhancing an evidence-based practice culture at Rasmussen Hospital. Watson emphasizes that caring goes further than the physical interaction. I feel that Jean Watson’s theory would be best fitting for Rasmussen Hospital because it encourages the daily practice of mindfulness in ways such as medication, breathwork, yoga, prayer, and connections with nature, encouraging growth in self-love and awareness which then distributes and flourishes to those around us. Being mindful is bringing our body and mind into harmony; to be at one with yourself, with what you are doing, and those around you. Formulate a recommendation for the theorist that best aligns to the facility.
