4-3 Assignment: Summarizing English Department, SNHU English 122: Composition 1 Professor Michael A. Rhodes, M.F.A, M.A May 30, 2021
2 In “Mother Tongue”, the author, Amy Tan, uses some anecdotes in a conversational writing style to describe how her mom was treated poorly in a lot of places because of her “limited” English. By contrast, she states “But to me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural” (Tan, 1990). She knows her mother's English expressions are not representative of how much she actually understands. The author wants to show the audience by using the old
analogy “don’t judge a book by its cover”, to indicate that one’s intelligence or ability should not be evaluated based on one’s use of English, particularly for those who use English as a second language.
