Garrett Wedemire Eagle Scholars 102 - 003 Museum of the Bible DC Trip 1 April 2019 My Experience on the DC Trip 1. There were a lot of people that wanted to do a lot of different things throughout the day with such little time. I got connected with a group that wanted to go to the holocaust museum, but afterwards all of us wanted to do something fairly different. We were able to work out a plan that allowed us to stop at all of the places that we all wanted to go. The group that wanted to go to the holocaust museum I had not known all that well. I knew most of the people’s name in our group, and had seen them around before, but that was about it. We all connected very well. We took tons of photos, laughed a bunch throughout the day, and I got to make some really awesome new friends! When somebody In another group didn’t feel like they were really doing anything with the group that they wanted to do, we allowed them to join our group. When we stopped at Wegman’s on the way down I made it a priority to talk to the others on thus bus, and to even talk with Mr. DiGregorio. It was kind of funny because at the beginning and at the end of the day everybody was so tired, and you could tell by the looks on their faces. 2. DC has always been one of my favorite places to go ever since I went there just five years ago. The history of DC, and all of the historic moments that you can just imagine took place through those streets amazes me. The best part of DC is all of the amazing museums. There is so much to see, and you could spend weeks upon weeks going to all of the museums and more. Every little artifact in each of the museums is a piece of history. When you look at something it almost makes you think of some of the hardship that the people who used these items went through, and it really makes you reflect back on your life. 3. The first exhibit I want to talk about is the National Archives famous document exhibit. In the national archives is the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution of the United States, and the Magna Carta (copy?). It’s so cool getting to look at these hundreds of year-old documents and think about what our founding fathers had to go through to get the freedoms these documents list. The second exhibit that I gained something from was the different exhibits at the African American Museum. To look back not even a hundred years at what the African Americans had gone through with segregation and being able to look at the different artifacts in this museum just allowed

me to think back and see how far America has grown, and changed, but still how much America has to remain growing. The final exhibit I want to talk about really isn’t an exhibit it’s a monument and that is the Lincoln Monument. Being able to walk up to this statue and look up at such a historic man that led so many people out of slavery is a blessing that so many people take for granted. 4. I think the value of having reminders such as these artifacts is that they are a constant reminder of where we were as a nation or where we were as a people, and how far we have come and grown as a nation together, and it also makes us look back and remember all the pain, suffering, and even the joy of these different artifacts and the things they were used in. I think if I had to make a museum of myself and had to put in three different items that displayed me, I would choose the following: The first item I would choose would be a collection of all my writings. I would choose this first because all my life I have wanted to tell a story and I’ve always loved to write, so this would show who I was and how I changed over the years. My second item would be a collection of all my pictures. Pictures show so much emotion, and it allows you to go back to the time and place where the photos were taken and think back of the memories. Finally, I would say my different bibles from when I was growing up. As we mature and get older, we get different bibles, from the beginning we get easy picture bibles and as we transition into adulthood, we get the full-blown bibles. 5. The funniest memory on the trip is when the group I was with was trying to take a photo in front of the Washington Monument in one of the Cherry Blossom trees. It took us a few minutes to try and get organized and have everybody stand in the right spot, I remember us laughing about it and finally getting a great picture. The best thing I learned from this trip to not forget the past. Some of my past may have been hurtful and some of it may have been great but it has all made me who I am today. The reason I am so glad I went on this trip is because I got to make a new group of friends. I connected with old friends and I had the best time on this trip....
