Movie Analysis of Hacksaw Ridge

Immanuel Kant’s deontological theory states that the rightness or wrongness of actions is determined not by their consequences, but by whether they fulfill their obligations or duty. It is solely about achieving and following a certain goal or duty. It doesn’t matter how you do it, it’s also not about the process but it is about whether they were able to fulfill their duty in the end. It will only be considered right if the duty was fulfilled. In the movie Hacksaw Ridge the main duty of the soldiers are to serve and protect the people and the state at all costs. In the army, Sergeant Howell labeled a gun as the soldier’s lover, mistress, concubine, or the only thing that they will ever truly love in life. The moral dilemma starts as Desmond doesn’t get a gun because he is a conscientious cooperator and so he cannot touch a gun. Kant’s ethics was applied in a way that Desmond was able to serve the people and the state regardless of him not carrying a gun. He was able to save people ’s life through being a medic. Through being a medic, he was able to fulfill his duty in the army and the state. As Captain Glover said, Desmond has done more than any other man could’ve done in the service of his country. Desmond was bullied and physically harmed by his team because he refuses to carry a gun. Desmond is a real example of how the deontological theory works. It doesn’t matter how he was able to serve the army and state with a gun o through being a medic. What matters is that he was able to fulfill his duty which is to serve, and as a medic, to save lives. He did not stop no matter how dangerous it was, he risked his life just like any soldier would do. Him being a medic doesn’t make him less of a hero in the army, just because he couldn ’t touch a gun means he doesn ’t want, or he is not capable to serve the country. Therefore, Desmond is morally right as he was able to perform in accordance with his duty in the state....
