Description of Newton Athletic Park The landscape defines a place. Natural landscapes give a place its identity and inspire the people around there. Artificial landscapes on the other hand are made to the liking of the inhabitants hence communicating their identity. In the digital era, people have the capacity to create intriguing landscapes that were previously reserved for nature. A typical example is athletic parks and parks in general. These splendid manmade landscapes give a sense of naturalness and close proximity nature. They are a necessary distraction from the busy lives of polluted city air and traffic chaos. This paper will focus on Newton Athletic Park which is one of several athletic parks in Surrey. Magnificent is the word that I uttered the first time I visited Newton Athletic Park a couple of years ago. The magnificence of the park has not faded over the years. A fresh breeze of freshly cut young grass welcomes you at the park’s entrance. A nice blend of green from the grass and well spaced amenities within the facility creates a sense of inspiration and relaxation. The bold markings on the ground consisting of yellow, black and white against the mostly green background gives the park a sophisticated and neat look.

The radiance of the parks changes depending on one’s angle. I am always intrigued by the magnificence of the park while viewing it from the soccer field. The contrast of green, white and grey as well as the view of the trees at a distance creates a natural sophisticated look.

Creation of Newton Athletics Park The reasons that lead to the creation of Newton Athletic Park are very similar to the ones that lead to creation many athletic parks around the world. The primary reason for the establishment of the park is to provide a platform that enables recreation and also promoting the community’s health and wellness. The facility provides a space that people can engage in physical activities such as jogging and participating in various games. In addition, the park is a suitable venue for social activities such as picnics. Newton Athletic Park was created as an economical tool. Through this part, the city of Surrey has been able to generate revenue to sustain itself. In addition, the park has lead to emergence of several businesses. For instance, the park features a BMX truck that enables individuals to participate in racing. Such a facility sustains the businesses of the people taking part in these sporting activities and those maintain the facility. This is just one of the many similar ventures that generate revenue for Surrey and empower its people economically. Therefore, Newton Athletic Park was created out of several reasons that are meant to cater for the wellbeing of the community residing in this area. Newton Athletic Park as Reflection of Culture It is impossible to separate parks and culture. Usually, parks and more specifically athletic parks mirror the culture of the host community. They are the enabler of the culture as they provide the space where multiple elements of the culture or identity of a particular community can be actualized. According to Ellis and Schwrtz (2016), one of the main reasons why cities and communities establish athletic parks in their neighborhoods is to provide an open space where various markers of culture such as festivals, music performances and public

gatherings can take place. More importantly, athletic parks are social amenities which provide a platform where individuals from all walks of life can meet and collaborate hence enabling passive culture integration. This interaction enables a community to retain and enrich its culture. From time in memorial, athletic parks have been used as markers of a particular region. For instance, they have statures that are relevant to the history or beliefs of a particular region. They present the heritage of a region such as the having statures illustrating the culture of a particular community in the area (Parks, recreation and culture, n.d) Therefore, athletic parts besides providing recreational facilities are valuable assets that display the aspirations and cultural tenets of a particular community (Ellis and Schwrtz, 2016). The Newton Athletic Park for instance bears the name Newton which is the name of one of the town centers in Surrey. Therefore, the park is named after a place that the locals identify with. A common practice all over the world is naming athletic parks after individuals who have contributed to the community or the country in one way or another. For instance, the United States has athletic parks named after renowned people in the country such as Martin Luther Kings among others. At the moment, humanity is battling with the rise of lifestyle diseases. Establishment of athletic parks such as Newton Athletic Park is an indication of a community’s aspirations to ensure the wellbeing of its members (Sauser and Jenkins, 2015). However, there are other cultural forces playing behind this general good. For instance, the obsession with staying fit has led to creation of a new elite class in society that invests tremendous amount of time and efforts to stay fit. The establishment of athletic parks such as Newton Athletic Park provides space for this class in society to pursue its goals and aspirations.

Today, the park is a beehive of activities with different people engaging in various activities ranging from football, basketball to jogging among others. The park has also catered for the wellbeing of the people economically given that there are businesses that thrive from the operations of this park. Similarly, the city of Surrey has benefitted hugely from the revenues that it generates from this park.
