NIKE SWEATSHOPS

2 Nike Sweatshops: Poor Conditions of Work

Nike is one of the largest and most popular athletic sportswear companies in the world. This company manufactures every form of athletic wear that involves sports. In their commercials, Nike advertises a positive image; however, many people do not know the type of conditions the workers are under. For example, Nike’s factory workers in Vietnam only earn an average of 20 cents per hour (Macguill,2018) Nike takes pride in the fact that they are a very positive company and have an excellent global reputation. However, many of the customers do not know about the shady businesses that are conducted at Nike Inc. This is because of their reliance on sweatshops, their reliance on underage workers and because of their lack of transparency. Workers in these sweatshops are suffering from repeated mass fainting’s from heat, exposed to toxic chemicals, working long hours and with low wages. (Powers, 2018) These are the poor work conditions Nike has for their factories, and many companies like Nike are using sweatshop work from countries where labour is cheap so the company can make more profit on items. Sweatshop workers would be laboring for eleven hours a day, six days a week, in extreme heat and end up with ten dollars a week, which is not close to a living wage. (Greenhouse, 1997) According to Steven Greenhouse, a factory inspection report in Vietnam, “exposing carcinogens that exceeded local legal standards by 177 times in parts of the plant and that 77 percent of the employees suffered from respiratory problems” (Greenhouse, 1997) A report showed that they found workers with breathing and skin problems that had not been transferred to be treated. Nike Another major issue is underage workers; Nike says that they would change the minimum age to 18 for workers in the shoe factories and 16 for clothing factories. (Wazir, 2001)
