Oedipus El Rey Notes TD 301 Original Oedipus -Written by Athenian Sophocles in 420 BC -Oedipus becomes king of Thebes after defeating the sphinx -Thebes is in dire need of help, there is rampant disease and the people turn to Oedipus for help -Oedipus sends creon to pythian apollos shrine to learn how to save thebes -Creon reports that in order for thebes to be saved, the killer of Laius, the former king must be found and punished -Creon claims Laius was killed by a band of thieves -Cadmeian=Citizens of thebes -Oedipus says if the killers admit to the crime they will be banished but unharmed, if not they will be killed Oedipus El Rey Notes -Setting: Current time starts in a prison in california Characters: 1. Oedipus 2. Coros 3. Laius-The king and Oedipus’ biological father 4. Jocasta-The queen, Creons sister and Oedipus’ biological mom 5. Creon- Brother in law of Oedipus 6. Tiresias- Oedipus’ adopting father who is tasked with killing oedipus as a baby 7. El huesero- bone doctor 8. El sobador- Healer(like a chiropractor) 9. El mistico- blind 10. El Curandero Plot -Starts w/ inmates in a prison talking about stories -Characters relations are introduced Scene 1 -Sobador predicts that Jocastas baby will kill Lauis and become the new ruthless king Scene 2 -Jocasta smokes and tells the baby to come out pleadingly Scene 3 -Jocasta gives birth, Laius drugs Jocasta and takes the baby Scene 4 -Laius tells Tiresias they must kill the baby -Tiresias tries to decline but Laius makes him hang the kid Scene 5 -Jocasta reacts to the death of her child Scene 6 -Owls tell Oedipus he is destined to kill his father

-Tiresias is Oedipus’ adopted dad and gets himself into prison to raise Oedipus bc he feels guilty Scene 7 -Oedipus says he plans to get out of prison -Tiresias tells Oedipus to go to Vegas -Oedipus wants to go to LA, dad says no -they say goodbye Scene 8 -Oedipus goes to LA -Laius and Jocasta are there Scene 9 -Oedipus and Laius get into a fight over a traffic issue -Oedipus punches Laius to death Scene 10 -Creon and Oedipus run into each other -Creon agrees to let Oedipus stay with him for a week Scene 11 -Oedipus joins the business of stripping cars -Oedipus and Jocasta start a romantic connection Scene 15 -Tiresias was Laius’ most trusted worker -Oedipus went to prison for robbing a costco -Tiresias robbed 7-11s to get in too -Jocasta tells Oedipus about her baby w/o knowing Oedipus is her baby Scene 16 -Talking about the ways business is done in exchange for protection Scene 17 -Creon attacks Oedipus bc he broke their agreement about dating Jocasta and bc hes threatened by Oedipus taking his position in the business -Jocasta tells Creon that theyre getting married -This means Oedipus will become the new king -Oedipus has to go through a ritual in which he is beaten before becoming king Scene 18 -Oedipus meets the healers whose blessing he needs to become king -Healers turn into Esfinge (three headed Aztec serpent) and attacks Oedipus -Oedipus answers the Esfinges riddle and this causes the esfinge to dissolve into the healers again -Oedipus makes the healers eat pages of the bible Scene 19 -Oedipus returns to Jocasta and tells her the news -Oedipus becomes king and they become married Scene 20 -Creon says that people will plot to kill Oedipus and then come after him and Jocasta -Creon finds out Oedipus killed Laius but Oedipus thinks Creon is talking about Tiresias

-Oedipus thinks creon is trying to lie and he attacks creon -Tiresias arrives Scene 21 -Tiresias tells Oedipus the truth about his father -Oedipus responded with anger towards tiresias -Oedipus attacks tiresias out of rage and then comes to his senses and apologizes Scene 22 -Oedipus tells Jocasta about killing Laius -Oedipus asks Jocasta to blind him, she does then he tries to kill himself w/ a blade but Jocasta takes it and kills herself first -Oedipus is taken by a coro member to his father -Creon is shot Epilogue -Oedipus and Tiresias both blind now return to prison...
