Description

Tutorial 2 oral exam prep -OTC OR PRESCRIPTION  Prescription, over the counter: ask all the characteristics: might be contraindicative to breast feeding or allergy such as drugs (i.e. penicillin) or eggs or content of the drug that you are going to prescribe, how will the patient react  Anaphylactic reaction, true allergy: tongue swells, immune reaction  Sensitivity: is not a true allergy but may vomit due to this  Adverse reaction: mild allergy  2. Do you have any medical conditions  any medication: to analyse counteraction  taken meds prior  assess patients/ clinical needs: current symptoms, normal symptoms  what do they want  4. Asked about drugs you have learned in the semester 1: if mentioned in the lecture then need to know all the labels under products&dose: identify drug i.e beta blocker, and know the dose from the AMH, what is the formulation of the drug such as paracetamol comes in 500mg and no more than 4 g a day. In the lecture, doses given or for AMH  mechanism  directions  adverse effects  duration of treatment: important for antibiotics  required monitoring: fever still high, ran it’s course no resolved symptoms. Contact GP to monitor blood pressure  toxicity signs  other counselling points: arrange pharmacist/ GP follow-up visit, you can refer out to lifeline for anti-depressants or counselling services  relapse prevention method  you are marked on your communication: language appropriate between patientANDdoctor, doctor talk quicker and use standardise method  Tone and volume of voice should be loud, clear pronunciation, give the consumer confidence, play the role as a pharmacist  Goes back to the rubric: Gather info, assess info, recommend treatment and provide counselling  Over the counter, repeats: when receiving the script: don’t need to ask for private room. Do you have any allergies, have you had it before, are they taking any other medication and have an interaction with the prescribed drug, if yes for allergy, what type of reaction did you have?  Is there any possibility you are pregnant or are you breastfeeding?  How old is the child, how much do they weigh: for dose purposes  When did you find out you are allergic to the medication: exposure 4-5 times and still have the same symptoms, the medicine needs to be changed  Do you have other medical conditions?  Prescription will be blue tacked infront of you in the exam  Activity 1

 Amoxicillin prescription: male, has less tablets for the course

 Sif. 1g every 8 hours for 7 days: Counselling: 1. take 2 capsules orally, three times a day for seven days. Consumer Medicine Information (CMI):  Counselling 2. It is an antibiotic, so it will treat existing symptoms such as chest infection. In this case, you should feel better after a few days. If your symptoms are not resolved in the 7 days, you should consult a GP. Another effect of this antibiotic maybe diarrohea, or rash. If it persists, you should consult a GP. There are support services for quitting smoking and consultations with a dietician to help you change your diet for a better outcome of this condition....
