Description

Frederick Taylor is known as the father of Scientific Management theory, otherwise known as Taylorism, because he believed that industry requires competence rather than lenient incompetence. As an engineer, Taylor brought a different viewpoint into the workplace. The purpose of his theory was to increase economic efficiency, especially labor productivity. Below I listed the pros and cons of Frederick Taylor’s Scientific Management Theory: Pros: Cons: 1. Enhanced production 1. Requires huge capitol 2. Ability to control 2. Management takes control 3. Decreases inaccuracy 3. Planning reduces productivity 4. Decreased autocracy 4. Demotivating approach 5. Cost of production reduced 5. Mechanistic 6. Quick decision making 6. Not suitable for teams 7. A benefit to customers 7. Avoids bargaining 8. Less production time 8. Stress Frederick Taylor contributed techniques that help with production management such as scheduling, budgeting and inventory. He also contributed techniques for operation management for development programs. Workers in the 1900’s had low wages, no benefits and poor working conditions. Child labor was also common as families needed the extra income to survive. As the 20th century continued, conditions improved with hourly wage, benefits and regulations on child labor. Workers in today’s world have a varying hourly wage, benefits including healthcare plans, worker’s compensation and regulations controlled by the U.S. Department of Labor. Although his theory increased productivity, it was not suitable for the employees. The workers had monotonous work and felt meaningless. Taylor believed workers were only motivated by pay and they didn’t enjoy work therefore, workers would need to be monitored and controlled. His theory is based on managers telling workers what to do, which is associated with an autocratic style of leadership. I would not be motivated to work while being strictly controlled every step of the way. I can see how workers felt like they were taken advantage of and made to feel like “robots.” Taylor’s work influenced the foundation for Henry Ford’s mass production of vehicles. Some other companies that still use Taylorism are Amazon and McDonald’s, in which employees work on a piece rate basis and break down every simple task such as mopping. In conclusion, I believe his theory was beneficial to the company by improving profit but, decreased the satisfaction of the employees.
