PATRICE LUMUMBA BIOGRAPHY Élias Okit'Asombo better known as Patrice Hemery Lumumba was born on July 2, 1925, in Onalua, Belgian Congo; now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Lumumba was an African nationalist leader and the first prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. However, he was forced out of office during a political crisis; he was assassinated a few months later, in January 1961 in Katanga province republic of Congo. During his brief time as prime minister, he was all about uniting a country after a long time of enduring colonialism, creating a new military force, restarting the economy, separating itself from European powers, and working through a lot of political confusion. From a young age, Lumumba was very avid about literature and he was able to groom his skills while attending missionary school. As he traveled throughout the country, he picked up many languages and ended up working as a postal service clerk. He became progressively involved in politics and took interest in the Belgian colonial system and how it impacted his country. Lumumba decided to take action against European rule, and he helped form the Congolese National Movement in 1958. The Congolese National Movement was also known as the MNC and it was the first nationwide Congolese political party. Like many other African leaders, Patrice Lumumba supported pan-Africanism and the freedom of colonial territories. He declared his regime one of positive neutralism—a return to African values and refusal of any imported philosophy, including the Soviet Union’s. Lumumba was a man of strong character who was going to pursue his policies, regardless of the enemies he

made within his country or abroad. Lumumba’s enemies/opponents had reason to fear the consequences of a radical Congo government.
