Description

Level 1 Research Questions/Writing Prompts (ETHICAL Perspective of Inquiry) Pre-workout supplements are marketed to provide energy boosts, enhance focus, assist with fatigue, etc. There are so many chemical ingredients in these supplements not many are aware of what each ingredient does or promises to do. The focus of this paper is to discuss the safety implications in the consumption of pre-workout. What laws govern or pertain to the issue? There is an ingredient that used to be in pre-workout supplements that was called DMAA (1,3-dimethylamylamine), it was linked to raise blood pressure, heart rate, risk of liver damage and possibly lead to heart attacks. This supplement was made synthetically in the laboratory and was originally a nasal decongestant, now people use it as a dietary supplement. It can be used to treat ADHD, weight loss, improve athletic performance/body building (RxList, 2021). The F.D.A received 60 reports of health problems in people who consumed any product containing the ingredient DMAA as well as 2 deaths. In 2011, 2 soldiers who consumed the pre-workout supplement “Jack3d” that had the ingredient DMAA, has passed away from cardiac arrests. The past several years, the FDA has been working on ensuring these products are taken off the market. In 2012, the FDA had sent letters to companies that marketed any product with the ingredient DMAA, would be violating the law and the ingredient is now illegal (Centers for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition, 2018). Level 1 Research Questions/Writing Prompts (CULTURAL Perspective of Inquiry) Which cultures or societies are most affected by the issue? This is a health disparity among the younger gym culture. Social media is a big influence on many of us, specifically Generation Z and millennials. An influencer can do a review on a supplement say something positive or even just be physically fit, and without really doing much research, people are consuming the product to get those same results. There are not many reported deaths because of “pre-workout supplements” but many articles that correlate the cardiovascular issues coming from consuming these supplements. The reported deaths that I have found have been within the 18-40 years old range: Thomas Mansfield (a 29-year-old personal trainer who consumed pre-workout supplement prior to passing), Michael Sparling (a 22year-old soldier who consumed Jack3d pre-workout), Claire Squires (30-yearold runner who took a pre-workout with amphetamine stimulant) and another soldier whose name remains anonymous. Level 2 Research Questions/Writing Prompts (ETHICAL)

What can be done to regulate/prevent consumption of pre-workout supplements? Level 2 Research Questions/Writing Prompts (CULTURAL) Discuss the influences of social media marketing and how it has cultivated this generation of gym-goers.
