Description

The personal “a”p.90 & Prepositional Pronouns pp. 110-111 (doc. 16) I.

The Personal “a” in Spanish 1. There is no English equivalent for the personal “a” in Spanish. Therefore, it does not translate. 2. In Spanish when people or traditional pets (cats and dogs) are the direct objects of verbs, we need to place the personal "a" in front of the noun when it refers to a specific person, specific people or pets. a. Do not use the personal “a” after the verb “tener” or any form of “hay”. b. Visitamos a nuestros abuelos. We visit our grandparents. c. Yo amo a mis gatos. I love my cats. d. Ella tiene dos gatos y dos hijos. She has two cats, and two sons.

Warning: Do not confuse the Personal A (used with people when they are direct objects) with the Directional A (which is used to point to a place in time or location.) Directional A is used with verbs like “ir (to go)”, and translates as "to". It is also used with Time to indicate "at what time does the party start?" ¿A qué hora empieza la fiesta?

II. 1.

Prepositional Pronouns. What are prepositions? a. They are words that create a relationship between other words in a sentence by linking phrases to the rest of the sentence. b. Prepositions indicate location as well as placement in time (such as before and after). They include words like “about, above, across, after, against, along, around, at, before, behind, below, beneath, beside, between, beyond...” and so on.

2.

Prepositional Pronouns: are pronouns that follow prepositions. For example, look at the following sentences. The prepositional pronoun is in underlined. a. He is in front of me. b. They are talking to us. c. She is with him. Subject Pronouns
