Description

Possession with de (p 58) & Possessive Adjectives (p. 78) Doc.13 In English, we always use the apostrophe and letter s to show when something belongs to someone. These few examples will look very familiar... a. your friends' house b. my wife's book Things get different when attempting to show possession using Spanish. The apostrophe as we know it is not used in Spanish. In addition, because the Spanish language does not have an apostrophe there are two most popular ways of showing possession.

I.

Using the possessive de":

The Spanish preposition de (of) is used to express possession, in place of the ’s or s' found in English. To say that someone or something belongs to someone or something else, invert the possessor and the thing possessed and put de between them. Word order: article + noun (thing possessed or person related to) + de + noun (possessor, owner) Showing Possession in Spanish Spanish= de + possessor English= possessor +'s or s' El libro es de Maria The book is Maria's. The car is my friend's. El carro es de mi amigo. la abuela de Ana y Pablo Pablo and Ana's grandmother Es la idea de los niños It is the kids' idea

II.

Using Possessive Adjectives:

a. Possessive adjectives are the words used in place of articles to indicate to whom or to what something belongs. Their usage is similar to English, but there are some differences in form. In Spanish there are different forms of possessive adjectives depending on whether the noun is masculine or feminine, singular or plural.

Possessive Adjective Forms: Singular

b. Spanish has many more possessives than English. For 2nd and 3rd person plural subjects ( nosotros, vosotros), there are four forms of the possessive. The gender and number of the noun possessed determine which form to use.

masc. sing: pencil fem sing: pen masc. plural: books fem plural: magazines

OUR nuestro lápiz nuestra pluma nuestros libros nuestras revistas

YOUR vuestro lápiz vuestra pluma vuestros libros vuestras revistas

c. Singular subjects (I, you, he) and third person plural (they) have only two forms: singular and plural. MY YOUR HIS/HER/THEIR sing: pencil

mi lápiz

tu lápiz

su lápiz

plural: tables

mis mesas

tus mesas

sus mesas

d. Su and sus: an important difference between Spanish and English is in the third person. In English you have to choose between his, her, its, and their, whereas in Spanish there is no distinction by gender, only by number. Su and sus can each mean his, her, its, your, or their depending on the context.  Su cama can mean his bed, her bed, its bed (e.g., the dog's), your bed, or their bed. In order to clarify, su and sus, the possessive de may be used with personal pronouns or names instead: el/la/ los/ las (definite article) + de + pronoun/name of owner 1. Es la silla de él. 2. La casa de Elena está allí. 3. La pizzería de Alán.

It´s his seat. The house of Elena is there. OR Elena´s house is there. The pizzeria of Alán OR Alán´s pizzeria.

e. When describing two or more nouns, a possessive adjective must be used in front of each one.  his brother and sister = su hermano y su hermana. A. Translate the following phrases into Spanish: 1. Your hands (Ud.): _____ 2. His sister: _____

________________ or _____

3. Their family: _______ 4. Her dad: _____ B.
