Mackenzie Dowd Personal Philosophy of Special Education November 2nd, 2020 I Believe I believe that every child, regardless of any type of disability, can learn. I believe every child has the potential to face certain obstacles and has the ability to emerge in growth with teacher, parent, and peer support. Special  education is the practice of educating students in a way that addresses their individual differences and special needs. The process of helping those with  needs typically involves an arrangement specifically for that particular student. This can involve different methods of teaching, using certain equipment and materials to help them, and having a well equipped setting for them to learn in. As someone who will be entering the world of education in the very near future, and will more than likely encounter students with learning disabilities, I believe that every child, regardless of their disabilities, can learn with the right process, support, and guidance. As stated in the introduction, I will be entering the world of education as a teacher very soon. I know that as an educator I am going to be encountering students with different disabilities and I am going to have to be working with them and learn how to perform a method of teaching that best suits them, as well as my students who do not have disabilities. All children, regardless of any disabilities, have the ability to learn and grow while in school as long as they have the right guidance and support that they need in order to grow along with their classmates. If I am going to be an effective teacher to my students, I have to utilize my skills to the best of my ability and there may be times where I have to modify my ways of teaching in order to teach those with disabilities. No child deserves to be left behind in school just because something may

be holding them back. You need to work with them, regardless of issues that can and will arise, or else they will never grow. Something that has really helped students with disabilities learn and grow is the The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act is a law that makes public education available to eligible children with disabilities throughout the nation and ensures special education and related services to those children no matter what. When a child qualifies for these services, they are designed an education plan that best fits their needs. They have a team of individuals, (classroom teacher, SPED teacher, psychologist, and parents) that figure out a way to help them succeed to the best of their ability in the classroom. With this team, they are provided a free and public education that includes services that are provided by the school, provide an appropriate education for that student in each grade level, and are provided their own individualized program that best suits them. IDEA has helped many students with disabilities grow and succeed in a public education setting and has better prepared them for whenever it is time for them to go out into the real world if their disability permits them to be able to do so. Even with IDEA at the students discretion, students with disabilities will still face certain obstacles throughout the course of their education. A student with disabilities will more often than not face different obstacles throughout their schooling, but teachers can provide different strategies to help them overcome these obstacles. Students may face physical obstacles such as mobility access, emotional issues, and one of the most important ones for the teacher and student, which is the process of learning and the equality of it compared to other students. As an educator, a teacher should be prepared to handle emotional issues that could arise from a student with a disability, and as a future educator, I expect to be trained so I am able to help that student in the most efficient way possible. I

believe one of the most important challenges for the teacher and student is making sure that the student is able to have equal learning access to other students. A teacher can make sure that their process is equal by equipping lesson plans that fit their students and their students with disabilities needs. If the student still seems to be struggling, then the teacher can try and work individually with the student, or talk with their other teachers to see if there is anything better that can be done to help the child. Aside from obstacles that a child with disabilities faces, there are still important considerations that are to be thought of whenever a child is going to be receiving their education. Whenever placing a child with disabilities in a school where they can best receive their education, there are some things that need to be considered while this decision is being made. Some of these considerations are: The content of the students IEP (how low/high their IQ is, the severity of their disability etc), what is required in terms of disability for the student to be placed, The likelihood that the placement option will provide a high probability of helping the student to reach her/his goals, and the consideration of any potentially harmful effects that the placement option might have on your student or if the services will be equal. These are considerations that should be thought of every time these decisions for the student are being made, as it is about their education and future. A special teacher is a person that is going to be playing a very vital role in their life, so they need to be ready to perform the best for that child. A child with disabilities will often have a teacher that is specifically there to help them and them only. They will play a very big role in their life so it is important that they know what and what not to do for that child. They are there to offer advice for the classroom teacher for whenever the child is placed in a regular classroom setting, they need to offer academic and behavioral support to the student, and be able to provide effective instruction specifically made

for that student. They also need to be there for the student emotionally and be able to help them with any challenges that may arise throughout their school career. They will often have a lot of one-on-one time with them because they are the students main teacher. Although the special education teacher is with the SPED student the majority of the day, they will be spending time with their regular classroom teacher as well, so it is important for the regular classroom teacher to know what they need to do for that student as well. A student with a disability will be around their regular classroom teacher almost every day. They provide very important roles for these students. Some of the most important roles that a teacher can give to these students are offering emotional support whenever it is needed and knowing what and what not to say and do. They need to be able to provide a safe environment at all times and make sure that the student feels like they belong. They need to be able to provide an effective instructional way of learning for both the students with disabilities and for their students without disabilities. These roles are key in the classroom to be implemented by the teacher to make sure that these students are receiving the most efficient education for them, regardless of their disabilities because it is what ultimately helps them succeed in the classroom. Every child, regardless of any type of disability, can learn and every child has the potential to face and achieve certain obstacles and has the ability to emerge in growth with teacher, parent, and peer support. Special  education is the practice of educating students in a way that addresses their individual differences and special needs. There are so many ways that SPED  students can be helped and guided throughout their school career. As someone who will be entering the world of education in the very near future, and will more than likely encounter students with learning disabilities, I believe that every child, regardless of their disabilities, can

learn with the right process, support, and guidance. Every child deserves to be offered the same amount of education, regardless of any challenges they face along the way....
