English 1101 Outline Directions: Although the information in the parenthesis (below) guides you to write 1-4 sentences or whichever, for your outline, you only need a couple of words or a sentence to complete each part of the outline. You should follow the sentence structure, however, for your actual essay. Bold the thesis statement. I.

Introduction Attention grabber (2-3 sentences) Decrease the number of tobacco

a. users. b. Background (2-3 sentences of the who, what, when, where, and why related to the topic) Number of tobacco users could decrease by raising the legal age. c. Thesis (1-2 sentences, with three prongs, and underlined) Although some disagree with raising the smoking age, raising the legal age would have multiple benefits in Florida and throughout the United States. Raising the age from 18 to 21 would lower the number of young adult tobacco users, there would be fewer cases of mouth, and lung cancer, as well as various other diseases, and the need for health care and paying astronomical insurance costs would lower as a result of the increased age. II.

1st body paragraph a. Topic sentence or first prong (1 sentence) 9 out of 10 smokers start before 18. b. Explanation of topic sentence (2-3 sentences) Study shows that children of smokers are more likely to smoke. c. Research, quote or paraphrase, (1-3 sentences) In “The Effect of Parental Smoking on Preadolescents”, the American Psychological Organization introduced the concept that children of smokers are significantly more likely to experiment with cigarettes and become addicted than children of nonsmokers. d. Analysis of material (3-4 sentences) Children of smokers received fewer negative consequences than children of nonsmokers. e. Counterpoint (1/2 – 1 sentence) Illegal substances can still be acquired. “If people want something bad enough they’ll get it”. f. Refute (2-3 sentences) While this is true, this will deter a major portion of smokers. g. Conclusion (2-3 sentences and the “so what” of the paragraph and the part which leads into the next prong) Raising the legal smoking age would make it harder for any children to ever even gain access to tobacco products, including but not limited to e-cigarettes.

Research, quote or paraphrase, (1-3 sentences) “Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of disease, disability, and death in the United States, yet more deaths are caused each year by tobacco use than by all deaths from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), illegal drug use, alcohol use, motor vehicle injuries, suicides, and murders combined.” (Healthy People 2020). d. Analysis of material (3-4 sentences) Diseases caused by smoking are preventable. e. Counterpoint (1/2 – 1 sentence) If you’re die no matter what, why not die in a puff of smoke and do the things you love. f. Refute (2-3 sentences) It’s not healthy g. Conclusion (2-3 sentences and the “so what” of the paragraph and the part which leads into the next prong) Tobacco in any form can cause disease. IV.

3rd body paragraph a. Topic sentence or first prong (1 sentence) Health insurance requires you disclose whether or not you’re a smoker. b. Explanation of topic sentence (2-3 sentences) Insurance and health care is cheaper if you don’t smoke. c. Research, quote or paraphrase, (1-3 sentences) “Smoking places a high economic burden on health system and society as a whole. Therefore, stronger intervention measures against smoking should be taken without delay to reduce the health and financial losses caused by smoking” (Ghobadi). d. Analysis of material (3-4 sentences) Many 18-21 year olds can’t afford to move out, let alone have expensive health care. e. Counterpoint (1/2 – 1 sentence) People should be allowed to make their own choices. f. Refute (2-3 sentences) They’re still allowed, just at an older age, when they might have more sense. g. Conclusion (2-3 sentences and the “so what” of the paragraph and the part which leads into the next prong) Raising the legal age would deter costs.
