2 Theory Now watch the video (click here) about the theory concerning the phrasal verbs and complete the following items: 2.1 Definition A phrasal verb is a verb + a fixed preposition e.g. move on end up The fixed combination forms a phrase, hence the name ‘phrasal verb’. When a preposition (=voorzetsel) is part of a phrasal verb, we call it a particle. The meaning of a phrasal verb us figurative. 2.2 The use of phrasal verbs We use phrasal verbs in spoken English. We use it when talking to your friends Phrasal verbs sound more natural , sounds like a native speaker.  Phrasal verbs are used in the informal style register. 2.3 Two types of phrasal verbs 2.3.1 a (regular) phrasal verb = verb + a fixed particle e.g. to end up 2.3.2 a phrasal verb + a preposition = verb + a fixed particle + a fixed preposition e.g. to look down on 2.4 How to tell a phrasal verb from a prepositional verb (= verb + a preposition) (see also: book p. 166 - the box at the bottom of the page)

The difference between a prepositional verb and a phrasal verb can be told by looking at the preposition/particle: the preposition of a prepositional verb is a no fixed preposition the particle of a phrasal verb is a fixed particle the meaning: the meaning of a prepositional verb is literal the meaning of a phrasal verb is figurative the stress pattern: with a prepositional verb, the stress falls on verb with a phrasal verb, the stress falls on particle
